As a fervent cinephile myself, I’m excited to share that Colin Farrell hasn’t dismissed the possibility of another season gracing our screens with “The Penguin,” the captivating Batman spinoff series. This Irish gem, known for his spellbinding portrayal of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, just added a new trophy to his collection – the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series.
After his victory, Farrell expressed that he’d be willing to reprise his role again if a suitable concept is proposed. “I concur with what Matt Reeves, Dylan Clark, and Lauren LeFranc have mentioned, which is if they develop a powerful idea for a second season that we all feel passionately about continuing the exploration of Oz’s character, then absolutely,” he said during the virtual SAG Awards press room.
Farrell emphasized that any future installments of the series should align with the broader Batman universe as envisioned by Reeves. As he put it, “Everything needs to be connected to the Batman world.” Farrell initially played Oz in Reeves’ 2022 film “The Batman,” starring Robert Pattinson, and is now set to return to the role for the sequel, titled “The Batman 2.”
In the realm of Gotham today, Matt Reeves is undeniably the greatest (G.O.A.T.), leading the pack and shaping a fresh perspective for Gotham through his Batman film, as stated by Farrell. This new direction must coexist harmoniously with other aspects. So we’ll have to wait and see what Matt Reeves and his team create. However, if there’s an opportunity for me to be involved, I’d certainly consider it enthusiastically.
Ever since “The Penguin” concluded its first season in November, the series has been garnering more and more attention. Meanwhile, its lead actor, Farrell, has been raking in awards such as those at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and Saturn Awards. However, despite all this acclaim, Farrell remains modest about setting any kind of precedent for television based on comic books.
He confessed that he might be too self-focused to fully appreciate the responsibility of representing his genre – the blend of comic book pulp. He indicated his affection for Batman franchises such as “Batman ’66” comics, and explained, ” frankly, I don’t feel like I’m setting any standards. Instead, I see myself adding to a long line of talented actors who have created iconic characters. My interpretation is simply different, but it’s all quite extraordinary. To be truthful, none of us anticipated this level of success… It’s incredibly fulfilling.
Regarding another season of “The Penguin,” the final call hasn’t been made yet. If HBO chooses to renew it, the show would need to be categorized differently, shifting from a limited series to a regular drama series, similar to what FX’s “Shōgun” and HBO’s “Big Little Lies” did before.
The specific date for another season of “The Penguin” is yet to be confirmed, as “The Batman Part 2” is scheduled for 2027 release. It appears that we might have to wait until at least 2028 or even later for the return of “The Penguin.
Previously during the awards ceremony, Jamie Lee Curtis playfully shared that she had contracted COVID-19 from Colin Farrell at the Golden Globes. Farrell acknowledged this when he accepted his award, humorously adding, “Indeed, I am responsible! But Brendan Gleeson also infected me, so I was simply sharing the virus.
