It has been revealed that Moon Knight won’t continue with a second season, adding another title to the growing lineup of Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+.
Information provided by Brad Winderbaum, currently the chief at Marvel TV, known for weaving stories more prolifically than Rumpelstiltskin in recent times, serves as our source.
Priorities have shifted
In the comic book Winderbaum is writing, he expresses his hope that there will be a second season of Moon Knight, but it seems there’s a future plan for Moon Knight in the pipeline.
In simpler terms, Winderbaum stated that Marvel Television has evolved in stages, and Moon Knight was part of a series of shows aimed at introducing characters who would be connected to the future. However, moving forward, our focus has changed. Now we’re producing shows that can be released annually, more like traditional television programming.
Recently also saw the news that as a result of those shifting priorities that Marvel TV has paused development on Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror Inc.
Marvel’s shift in priority is all about money
Previously discussed, the main cause behind the changes in priorities is financial constraints, leading Marvel Television to cease production of costly shows. Bob Iger disclosed that Disney suffered significant losses in streaming, with Marvel investing an astounding $200 million for each season of shows like She-Hulk and Secret Invasion, which unfortunately flopped on Disney+. In fact, the significant failure of Secret Invasion prompted Marvel Studios to restructure its TV division entirely, with a new focus on these revised priorities.
It’s likely that you’ll encounter more street-level TV series similar to “Daredevil: Born Again” due to the recent rumors about the Marvel Netflix characters returning. This is primarily because these types of shows are cost-effective to produce, such as “Echo,” “Agatha,” and so on. However, I’m curious about where the $200 million budgets disappeared for shows like “She-Hulk” and “Secret Invasion.” It seems plausible that a significant portion was allocated towards DEI initiatives, which might be referred to as “loans.
It’s frustrating for me as a big fan of Nova, but since Kevin Feige chose to focus on DEI characters that many people aren’t fond of and creators who seem disinterested in the comic world or crafting a good narrative, I find myself facing the repercussions. It’s time Disney took action and cleaned up Marvel’s house. The same goes for Lucasfilm. Just look at what happened with Captain America: Brave New World. Fans don’t want that kind of storytelling.
When can we expect to see Moon Knight again, is it around five or ten years from now? That seems quite a long wait; it almost feels like the Marvel Cinematic Universe is losing its touch.
