The most recent Marvel production, titled “Captain America: New World Order“, is experiencing a decline in box office sales. Initially, it generated a robust $100 million during the Presidents Day weekend, but its second week saw an alarming 68% decrease, resulting in earnings of only $28.3 million across 4,105 theaters in North America.
To date, the movie has earned approximately $141 million within the U.S. and an additional $289.4 million globally. Given its production budget exceeding $180 million (excluding marketing expenses), it currently needs to generate much more revenue before becoming profitable.
High-priced superhero flicks tend to experience significant decreases in their second week, but the decline of “Brave New World” is worse than typical. For instance, the last “Ant-Man” film experienced a comparable setback with a 69% drop, struggling to amass half a billion dollars worldwide. In contrast, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” managed to maintain its momentum following its release and became a blockbuster success. However, “The Marvels” currently holds the top spot for the steepest second-weekend drop at an impressive 78%.
Experts in the film industry suggest that this significant decline in viewership might be indicative of a new direction for Marvel movies. Despite the franchise maintaining its dedicated fanbase, the enthusiasm seems to have diminished compared to previous times. If _Brave New World_ continues to dwindle rapidly, it could serve as another warning signal that the seemingly invincible Marvel Cinematic Universe might be encountering significant difficulties.
The lack of significant upcoming blockbuster movies at movie theaters isn’t fantastic for them either. Since there are no major releases until Disney’s Snow White remake on March 21, it’s possible that people will have less motivation to go to the cinema in the near future.
