For approximately two decades, there had been no major collaboration between comic book heavyweights Marvel and DC. Since then, Marvel has become a division of Disney, while DC has remained a valuable intellectual property for Warner Bros. A renewed crossover between the universes appeared to be nothing more than a fantasy. However, according to Comics Beat (as reported by Comic Book), this dream might just come true! At the ComicsPRO retailer summit in California, DC’s Editor-In-Chief Marie Javins and Marvel’s Editor-In-Chief CB Cebulski announced a planned 2-part crossover, divided into two one-shots. Marvel will release a comic titled “Marvel/DC”, while DC will publish “DC/Marvel”. At this point, neither publisher has disclosed any additional details.
The most recent significant DC/Marvel collaboration event was “JLA/Avengers,” penned by Kurt Busiek and illustrated by the late George Perez. This four-issue series signaled the conclusion of a notable period. From the 1970s to 2004, crossovers between DC and Marvel were relatively frequent occurrences. During the ’90s, even the “Marvel Versus DC” mini-series spawned Amalgam Comics, where DC and Marvel characters were merged together. However, a thaw in the idea of a new crossover began in recent years. After being out of circulation for many years, these crossovers were reissued in omnibus editions. This sparked curiosity among fans, with some speculating that something might be brewing behind the scenes. As it turns out, there was indeed activity happening behind closed doors.
It’s unclear at this point who will form the creative teams for the crossover events involving DC and Marvel (or Marvel and DC). We can only speculate about the length of each one-shot comic, but it’s likely that well-known creators will be eager to see iconic characters like the Avengers clash with the Justice League again, or the X-Men battle the Teen Titans once more. This could even lead to DC President Jim Lee drawing the X-Men once more, a prospect that might justify the cover price alone. We anticipate further announcements in the coming months, especially around Comic-Con San Diego this summer. With Superman and Fantastic Four both set to hit theaters in July 2025, it seems we’re in for a joint blockbuster summer for the “Big Two”. Now, it appears that this shared excitement will also be reflected on the pages of comic books for the second half of 2025.
