It’s learned that Marvel Studios has decided to pause development on three MCU series including Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror Inc.
It seems the question was about a NOVA series being produced within budget constraints, and this might be the reason behind the cancellation of the three shows in question.
It’s likely not a mere coincidence that we’ve noticed rumors about Marvel planning to reintroduce their Netflix characters, as it’s cost-effective due to their street-level status.
Speaking about “Nova”, it could turn out to be a fortunate twist of events if they were considering a version that mirrors Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel, which haven’t fared well in the comic books. In truth, the transformation of Guardians of the Galaxy by James Gunn and the MCU might have been detrimental to those characters in their original comics (much like how Disney and the entire MCU have impacted the comic book world negatively).
What happened?
Deadline reported on Thursday how Marvel Television has “has simply shifted its priorities at the moment” and “paused development” on three projects, Nova, Strange Academy and Terror, Inc.
Additionally, the website mentions that none of the shows have received an official go-ahead yet, but it suggests that these projects could potentially be realized in the future.
The piece reveals that Marvel has chosen to overhaul its television department following the significant failure of “Secret Invasion.” Additionally, it’s been confirmed that these adjustments were made during the process of refining “Daredevil: Born Again,” which aligns with the information I previously shared.
What are the changes?
It’s worth noting that the modifications weren’t explicitly linked to a deadline, but rather occurred due to substantial financial losses Disney experienced in streaming. This included expensive productions like “She-Hulk” and “Secret Invasion,” shows that didn’t attract significant viewership, resulting in losses of $200 million or more per production.
Marvel Television appears to be reducing the volume of their output and opting for more cost-effective productions. The initial low-budget series they released was titled “Agatha“, unfortunately, it didn’t resonate with audiences as well.
Disney appears to be struggling to validate the investment of billions in content that seems underperforming. The issue might not lie in viewer exhaustion towards superheroes, but rather a saturation of subpar content being produced by these studios, leading to audience fatigue.
Too expensive
So back to Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror Inc., I’m guessing they would have been pretty expensive. Nova was supposed to be set in space, in which the head of Marvel TV compared to Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica (sounded cool).
The unusual “Strange Academy” was set to feature Benedict Wong, revolving around a school established by Doctor Strange to nurture youths with magical talents. Needless to say, it would’ve demanded an abundance of visual effects to portray the magic and other supernatural elements.
Terror, Inc. also would have required a lot of special effects. Not familiar? The character can take the body parts of other people into his own form and retain their abilities and memories.
Killed by DEI
If you’ve been eagerly awaiting shows like Nova, Strange Academy, and Terrible Inc. in comic book style, it’s Marvel Studios under Kevin Feige’s leadership that you can blame for ending those projects. Does this sound familiar to Star Wars fans?
