Earlier today news broke that Marvel Studios is hitting pause on three shows that were apparently in development, Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc. The reasons cited are general shifts in development strategy.
The change in Marvel’s television strategy now involves a method more akin to conventional TV production, as opposed to the previous approach that mirrored movie production. Instead of confirming a set list of series, which were almost always produced, Marvel is now exploring numerous concepts, understanding that not all will ultimately be produced for screen.
This adjustment follows Marvel’s management opting to approach show production differently, particularly with the revamp of the “Daredevil: Born Again” series in mind. The objective is to exercise greater care, concentrating on fewer projects to prevent flooding the market with too much superhero content.
Currently, industry expert Daniel Richtman has disclosed the initial concepts for the TV series that were planned but later halted in production.
The planned television series, titled Nova, was set to be headed by Ed Bernero, a renowned writer and producer recognized for his work on Criminal Minds. The narrative would center around Richard Rider, the titular Nova character, following the aftermath of Thanos’ assault on Xandar. After the destruction of his home planet, Rider was tasked with rebuilding the Nova Corps, a powerful intergalactic force. During this process, he encounters the danger posed by Annihilus and his Annihilation Wave, a destructive force that jeopardizes the entire universe. Alongside Rider in his efforts to restore the Corps, there would be other Novas, including Sam Alexander, a younger character associated with Nova, as well as fresh, original characters in their 20s.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve got to share some exciting tidbits I’ve picked up about an upcoming show. It seems they were considering Austin Butler for the role of Richard Rider, quite a catch, if you ask me! And guess who might be reprising their roles from the Guardians of the Galaxy series? None other than the talented Glenn Close and John C. Reilly. If things go as planned, they’ll be back, this time as part of the Nova Corps, tying the show neatly into the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe saga.
The upcoming TV series “Strange Academy” was planned to be helmed by director Amy Rardin, renowned for her work on “Echo”. In this program, Benedict Wong’s character, Wong, would assume the role of headmaster at a magical academy situated in New Orleans. The narrative would revolve around Wong’s mission to mold a fresh crop of young sorcerers, nurturing their magical skills. Characters like America Chavez (portrayed by Xochitl Gomez), recognized for her ability to traverse the multiverse, and Zelma Stanton (portrayed by Regan Aliyah), another comic book-inspired young sorceress, would be among the students.
The idea behind Strange Academy was presented as Marvel’s version of the widely appreciated “wizarding school” theme, bearing resemblance to Harry Potter and Netflix’s Wednesday. It would have centered around magic, mystical journeys, and the hurdles faced by a group of young sorcerers under the tutelage of Wong. This blend would have combined elements of the supernatural with the fast-paced, growing-up drama that’s characteristic of series like Harry Potter.
The Terror Inc. show was being developed by Peter Cameron, who worked on Carnival Row and WandaVision. The series was going to be very different from other Marvel shows, leaning heavily into horror. It would have followed the character Terror, an immortal antihero with a unique and gruesome ability: he can attach the body parts of others to himself, gaining their abilities, memories, and powers in the process.
This dark, mature-themed series was described as a full-on horror show, designed for an adult audience. The show would have explored Terror’s violent and unsettling way of gaining power and the consequences that come with it. Additionally, there were rumors that Terror was set to be part of the Midnight Sons film, a darker Marvel project that was previously in development, suggesting that this character could have tied into a broader, supernatural side of the MCU.
Finally, Richtman concluded his report with the following:
It seems they’ve decided to change their strategy this time around. Instead of immediately approving a series, Marvel wants to ensure they are content with the pilot first. Additionally, they are leaning towards producing more realistic and cost-effective shows.
