As I tread where Dawnshore once stood, I find myself in the complex and intricate Emerald Stair region of Avowed. Here lies another god totem waiting to be restored – quite the challenge! Compared to the straightforward exploration of Dawnshore, this area seems a labyrinth, making the search for all the Totem of Defiance fragments to restore The Schemer’s Offering an engaging, yet challenging quest.

Despite being quite laborious, it’s absolutely worthwhile to find every piece of it. Not just because you earn some fantastic stealth and Ranger abilities from it, but also because you’ll witness some of the most stunning vistas that Avowed has to offer. In fact, Emerald Stair is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is treacherous, particularly when darkness falls and only mushrooms illuminate the path.

As a devoted admirer, I’m excitedly exploring the captivating Emerald Stair, on a quest for The Totem of Defiance, also recognized as The Schemer’s Offering. This intriguing artifact consists of six fragments and a base that must be found and assembled. Similar to my previous adventure with the Totem of Rightful Rulership, each fragment offers a unique bonus when inserted into the base. However, this time around, I get to decide which of these two mighty totems I wish to activate!

After gathering the core parts and inserting all six pieces, The Schemer’s Gift will reach its complete upgrade and restoration, causing a brief sequence that spotlights the deity Skaen to play out.

The Schemer’s Offering

To begin your search for fragments of the Totem of Defiance, you’ll first need to locate its base, which is less likely to be stumbled upon unintentionally compared to Woedica’s. The Schemer’s Offering can be found at the summit of the Skaen Shrine within Delemgan Glade, to the northwest of Emerald Stair. To get there, you’ll have to navigate multiple platforms to reach it.

After gathering the item, make your way back to the campsite and position it there for you to begin assembling the six parts onto it subsequently.

Effigy Necklace

As I delved deeper into the Ancient Soil main quest, I stumbled upon the enigmatic Effigy Necklace hidden beneath the ancient ruins of Naku Tedek. If you happened to overlook this treasure trove during your initial playthrough, don’t worry – you can always revisit this area and uncover its secrets.

After entering the secret tunnels below the Naku Tedek Grounds:

  1. Go down the spiral staircase and turn left once you reach the bottom
  2. Use Giatta’s Spectral Jolt (or any other electric item or spell) to activate the switch to open the door
  3. Enter the room and use an ice spell or Eye of Rymrgand to make a platform in the water to climb up the tree root and onto the ledge where you will find the fragment on a desk

When deposited into The Schemer’s Gift, the Efficacious Necklace empowers your following strike, enhancing its power by 20% of the damage sustained and inflicted within ten seconds, starting from the moment you are struck. This effect can accumulate with Retribution.

Idol of Secret Hatred

The Icon of Hidden Enmity can be found within the Old Cavern, situated near the western cave entrance of Naku Tedek Grounds. This location makes it an easily accessible piece to gather following the acquisition of the Effigy Necklace.

Despite having two entrances at the Ancient Grotto, the most efficient path is to make your way to Naku Tedek’s campsite first.

  1. Climb down the ravine to the west of Naku Tedek Grounds and cross to the other side using the fallen tree trunk
  2. Turn left and continue to climb along the ledges until you reach the Ancient Grotto entrance, which will load the cave area
  3. Once inside, climb the ledge and crouch through the tunnel to your right where you will find the fragment next to a skeleton (which also has the Ring of the Founder unique)

The Idol of Secret Hatred increases your damage against unaware enemies by 25%.

Idol of Violent Rebellion

Atop the eastern tower of Ranger Headquarters in Fior mes Iverno stands an Idol symbolizing Violent Rebellion, a challenging ascent that necessitates quite a bit of climbing.

A good starting point would be to visit the Rolling Crags Beacon, located at the foot of the Ranger Headquarters, and then:

1. Explore the nearby terrain for any unusual geological features or signs of wildlife activity.
2. Familiarize yourself with the area map provided by the Ranger Headquarters.
3. Acquire any necessary permits or equipment from the Ranger Headquarters if needed for your planned activities.
4. Inform the Rangers about your intended itinerary and estimated return time, especially if you plan to venture off-trail.
5. Begin your hike or expedition, keeping safety precautions in mind and staying on designated trails whenever possible.

  1. The best place to start is to travel to the Rolling Crags Beacon at the base of the Ranger Headquarters and then:
    1. Climb the boxes on the south side of the tower and grab the overhang near the ladder
    2. Ascend the ladder to reach the first floor, turn left, and leap to the next platform
    3. Turn left again and continue along the walkway, climbing to the next platform
    4. Scale another ladder to reach the top of the tower, where you can pick up the fragment on a stack of boxes (as well as a chest containing awakened adra)

By fitting this piece, you’ll inflict more harm on your toughest foes, or ‘skull’ enemies, making them a tad simpler to defeat.

Sacrificial Dagger

You can discover the Sacrificial Dagger stuck in a door, accompanied by a note, at the Abandoned Farms in the Rolling Crags region, which is situated north of Fior mes Iverno. Since it’s an expansive area, locating the Sacrificial Dagger should be relatively straightforward. However, do remember to eliminate the Xaurip camp first before proceeding. This region isn’t particularly challenging in terms of character levels.

Using the Sacrificial Dagger, you can activate Second Wind to unleash a flurry of attacks – a very beneficial addition during challenging situations where you might be at a disadvantage in combat.

Obsidian Prayer Beads

The Obsidian Prayer Beads can be found on a rocky outcrop to the west of Delemgan Glade, offering a scenic view of the courtyard below. For some time, I struggled to find this piece, mainly because the route up there is tricky to navigate, making me question if it was possible to access the western high ground at all.

To grab the Obsidian Prayer Beads:

  1. Enter the Delemgan Glade courtyard, facing the large tree
  2. Turn right to climb up the rocks near the broken stone pillar
  3. Turn right again at the top of the ledge and continue forward until you reach the large tree root that forms an archway over the path
  4. Climb the tree to reach the rocky overhang
  5. Turn around and jump to the ruin platform that overlooks the courtyard where you started

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but sing praises for the Obsidian Prayer Beads! These enchanting artifacts boost my critical hits, causing them to inflict substantial poison build-up. This makes them an ideal pick for any Ranger who’s aiming for high critical strike rates.

Idol of Covert Plots

The Idol of Secret Schemes can be discovered in a sealed church within the dismal, damp lands known as the Grim Wetlands. This location lies due east from the Infested Camp, atop the Emerald Stair’s highest point. Since it’s situated so far up north in this area, the Grim Wetlands are among the more difficult regions you’ll encounter within Emerald Stair. However, locating this artifact does not involve any combative encounters.

Since the front door of the church is barred, to collect this fragment:

  1. Head to the left side of the church
  2. Press the switch hidden in the statue’s lamp
  3. Enter the church through the new side door and grab the fragment from the bench at the back

The Idol of Covert Plots enhances both Constitution and Dexterity, but it’s not particularly captivating among Skaen’s enhancements. Despite this, it proves to be quite beneficial in almost every build due to the speed-enhancing properties of Dexterity. This enhancement boosts your attack speed and overall action speed significantly.
