Are Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist Coming Back? Marvel Studios Teases The Defenders’ Return

Marvel Studios is currently contemplating a reappearance of beloved characters from The Defenders series, with Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock (Daredevil) leading the way in Daredevil: Born Again. This potential return also includes Jessica Jones portrayed by Krysten Ritter, Luke Cage played by Mike Colter, and Iron Fist acted by Finn Jones.

In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel’s Streaming, Television, and Animation Head Brad Winderbaum hinted that they are seriously considering bringing the superheroes back. While no official announcement has been made yet, fans can look forward to potential future appearances of these beloved characters.

Winderbaum continued by expressing, “I’m not at liberty to share much, but let me tell you, it’s thrilling to be given the opportunity to create within that playground. Of course, compared to a comic book, we don’t have an endless supply of narrative tools. If you can imagine it, then you can make it happen.

Winderbaum stated, “Handling characters, time, and the grandeur of production to construct a cinematic universe, particularly on television, presents quite a challenge. Yet, with all these factors considered, it’s also incredibly creatively stimulating, and something we are actively delving into.

Ritter played the role of a past superhero and detective in Melissa Rosenberg’s MCU series on Netflix that spanned over three successful seasons. In this show, she was Jessica Jones, who headed a gripping mystery, but also brought to life other well-known Marvel characters like Rachel Taylor’s character Trish Walker (Hellcat) and David Tennant’s villain Zebediah Killgrave (The Purple Man).

Back in 2015, I was thrilled when the Marvel-Netflix partnership kicked off with Daredevil, paving the way for standalone series like Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. The climax was the crossover miniseries The Defenders in 2017. But sadly, by 2018, these shows began to be axed as Marvel Studios shifted their focus towards self-produced content on Disney+.

There’s been a surge of whispers that more members of The Defenders will reappear, following the return of our neighborhood superheroes. Krysten Ritter has even expressed enthusiasm about coming back as Jessica Jones, when Winderbaum proposed the idea during the D23 Brazil fan event in 2024.
