Previously centered on Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), Nike’s .Swoosh division has shifted gears towards manufacturing and selling physical goods, a move that I find expected but interesting given Nintendo’s current absence from the picture. While there’s no official partnership announcement as of now, it seems to me that Nike might have taken design cues from Donkey Kong for these upcoming shoes, as suggested by some rumors. The new Nike Air Max 1 Low Poly colorway is reportedly being referred to as “Big Head Origins” according to Sneaker News.
1. The design of these shoes appears to be strongly influenced by the amusingly shoeless monkey character, Donkey Kong. Given that Nike’s Swoosh label is their gaming division, it fits perfectly. The color scheme of the shoes, brown and red, mirrors Donkey Kong’s appearance. Additionally, the upper part of the shoe features a fuzzy, suede material that resembles Donkey Kong’s fur.
2. It looks like these shoes have been creatively inspired by the ironically barefoot monkey character, Donkey Kong. Since Nike’s Swoosh is their gaming sector, it makes sense. The color scheme of the shoes, brown and red, matches Donkey Kong himself. Furthermore, the upper part of the shoe has a fuzzy, suede texture that mimics Donkey Kong’s fur.

The well-known Nike Swoosh has a red, jagged pattern, giving off an older gaming console (Nintendo 64) feel. The tongue of the shoe bears the pixelated “Nike Air Max” text, maintaining the retro game motif. On the back of the sneaker, there’s a circular yellow rubber Nike Air badge that resembles a banana coin.
Regarding the Nintendo 64-inspired sneaker, it seems to draw graphics inspiration from “Donkey Kong 64” in its insoles, featuring a ground pattern reminiscent of the game. Moreover, the coins resembling DK but labeled as DS for DotSwoosh remind me of “Donkey Kong Country 2.” The banana peel detail also hints at the latter game. Is it just me, or does this sneaker evoke a strong nostalgia for those classic Nintendo titles?
Collaborative shoe launches have been increasing lately, and most recently, Red Hulk clogs were unveiled. At this point, there’s no set release date; but it’s expected that they will become available in either Spring or Summer 2025. The estimated retail price is $150.
