Adam Scott shared an anecdote about a TV appearance that luckily never made it on air, during his interview on Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend podcast on Monday, February 17. He reminisced about a failed joke he told during a visit to the show while promoting Big Little Lies season 2.
In the rough sketch that Scott intended to execute, he likened his fellow actors to the iconic ’80s supergroup, the Traveling Wilburys. He believed this segment would pay tribute to the extraordinary and star-studded cast of Big Little Lies if it were titled “the Traveling Wilburys of Legendary Actresses.
Instead of expecting the comparison to resemble a comical explosion, it turned out to be one of Scott’s most mortifying experiences in life. The Parks and Recreation actor described his prank as follows: He had created an album cover where instead of the Traveling Wilburys, the actresses’ faces were placed on their bodies.
In a different scenario, the supergroup originally featured Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Dhani Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jim Keltner. However, in this fictional account, Scott swapped their faces with those of Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.
During filming, the actor discovered that the majority of the audience were unfamiliar with the Traveling Wilburys, making his joke fall flat. He exclaimed, “I don’t think anyone under 50 knows who they are!” Scott remembered the silence that followed his joke was so deafening it sounded like the humming of an air conditioner unit on set.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it like this: In my personal experience, I’ve heard a story about an actor confessing that he pleaded with the network to prevent his appearance from airing, sparing him from any additional mortification. This tale brings back memories for me, as Scott was one of the celebrities who didn’t shine on my podcast in years past.
