The Disappointer, a distinct pistol in Avowed, is described as a weapon that leaves anyone who tries it feeling frustrated. Even those who don’t fall for its appealing appearance sometimes give it a try, hoping it’s a clever disguise hiding an artifact of immense power created by a skilled craftsman. Unfortunately, the Disappointer isn’t what it seems and doesn’t possess any extraordinary qualities.

In Pillars of Eternity from 2015, the Disappointer was initially described as vendor trash, hidden well, but in Avowed, the Disappointer can be acquired early and with ease, potentially lasting throughout most of the game for a pistoleer. So, don’t let its initial description dissuade you – come back for it later out of curiosity if you overlooked it at first.

To advance with Avowed’s primary storyline until Paradis becomes accessible, then you’re free to acquire the weapon from merchant Kerdhed “Cutty” Colen located in the northwestern part of the Northern Paradis region. In essence, that sums up your next steps.

How to upgrade the Disappointer

The weapon known as The Disappointer initiates with the charm “Miserable,” which diminishes its damage by 10%. Nevertheless, due to its unique nature, it’s advisable to prioritize upgrading The Disappointer’s enchantments more urgently than you would with most other weapons in the game.

In the game Avowed, every weapon offers two choices to enhance its magical properties. One enhancement for The Disappointer allows the gun to deal an area-of-effect 10% damage reduction to nearby enemies when fired, which is quite intriguing, but I find myself drawn more towards the less exciting yet standard upgrade option for this particular weapon.

The enhancement ‘Tender Love and Care’ switches the Disappointer’s 10% damage reduction to a 10% damage boost. Combined with its existing bleed damage, this equates to a 20% increase in overall damage compared to a standard pistol. While it may not be the most thrilling ability in the game, it makes the Disappointer a reliable choice, even outperforming a regular pistol in some aspects. I’ve been using a pair of Disappointers, along with the lightning pistol Caeroc’s Pride (obtainable in Dawnshore via Tempestuous Luandi’s bounty), on the Path of the Damned difficulty, and these weapons have served me well.
