Director Edward Berger has openly discussed the debates swirling around the movies “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist“. During their competition at the BAFTA Awards, he offered unique insights and highlighted the distinct ways these discussions varied for each production.
During an interview with Deadline, Berger shared his viewpoint that incorporating sophisticated technology in a movie can actually amplify its impact. This comment was in response to the debate sparked by the application of AI in the film “The Brutalist,” featuring Adrien Brody.
In a recent interview, the BAFTA-nominated director was queried about his thoughts on Emilia Pérez enduring backlash from divisive social media comments made by the film’s lead actress. Additionally, The Brutalist movie has been under fire for its reliance on AI technology, a topic the interviewer deemed unimportant as they predicted it would soon become standard practice in the industry.
Berger replied, “As technology advances, it naturally finds its place in films. We integrated sound, color, and visual effects; people may have wondered at first, ‘How can computers create visual effects?’ Initially, there was resistance, but then it simply became… part of the natural evolution.
He also pointed out, “Technology and film development move forward together. We’re all working within budget constraints when making films. If technology can assist actors, help complete movies ethically, and prevent widespread job losses, then we can expect to see even more technological advancements in the cinema industry.
1) Karla Sofía Gascón is facing examination due to accusations that some of her past posts may have offended certain groups after she was nominated for the role of Emilia Pérez. Simultaneously, the creators of The Brutalist have faced backlash for employing AI technology to modify actors’ accents in their production.
