Mubi, known for releasing films like “The Substance” and “Queer“, has obtained the distribution rights for the much-awaited gay romance drama “The History of Sound” in North America. On the other hand, Focus Features and Universal Pictures International (UPI) have acquired the movie’s international distribution rights.
Under the direction of filmmaker Oliver Hermanus (known for “Living” and “Moffie”), the movie recently completed filming, scheduled to hit theaters in 2025 following an unspecified global debut.
Back in 2021, “The History of Sound” was my next cinematic venture following “Gladiator II”. In this captivating tale, I, Paul Mescal, portray Lionel alongside Josh O’Connor as David. Post-World War I, our characters embark on an extraordinary expedition to document the voices, melodies, and narratives of the American populace. As our adventure unfolds, a profound bond blossoms between us, culminating in a tender romance.
The movie is inspired by Ben Shattuck’s acclaimed short story, which he himself transformed into a screenplay. Notably, Mescal serves as an executive producer for this project, representing his initial role as a producer.
This movie is created by Andrew Kortschak and Lisa Ciuffetti from End Cue, Sara Murphy from Fat City, and Thérèsa Ryan-van Graan, Zhang Xin, and Oliver Hermanus collectively. It’s financially backed by Film4, Closer Media, Tango Entertainment, and Storm City Films.
Among the executive producers are Ollie Madden (representing Film4), William Horberg and Richard Lewis (Closer Media), Tim Headington, Lia Buman, and Neil Shah (Tango), and Dennis Masel and Gabrielle Nadig (Storm City). Additionally, Mescal works as an executive producer alongside Walter Kortschak, Ryan Zacarias, and Andrea Roa. In simpler terms, the list of people responsible for overseeing this project includes Ollie Madden from Film4, William Horberg and Richard Lewis from Closer Media, Tim Headington, Lia Buman, and Neil Shah from Tango, Dennis Masel and Gabrielle Nadig from Storm City. Mescal is also part of the team serving as an executive producer, along with Walter Kortschak, Ryan Zacarias, and Andrea Roa.
Speaking about “The History of Sound” as his “deeply personal endeavor,” Hermanus elaborated on the significance this movie holds for him and its main performers.
As a dedicated cinephile, I am beyond excited to share that this movie has been my heart’s work for the past five years, not just mine but also Paul Mescal, Josh O’Connor, and many others. It’s an incredible feeling to have found collaborators like Mubi in North America and Focus Features and Universal Pictures International worldwide. These visionaries share my passion for cinema, and I am truly grateful that our film will now be part of their esteemed family of films. This partnership has made this creative journey even more rewarding.
