Spoiler Alert! The following article contains heavy season 6 spoilers.
The final fate of John Kreese in the last season of Cobra Kai remains a subject of discussion – even among the show’s producers. Hayden Schlossberg, Josh Heald, and Jon Hurwitz are considering alternative endings for him.
In the second-to-last episode, Kreese confronts his former friend-turned-enemy Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) on Silver’s yacht. Their intense conflict continues until Kreese lights a spilled puddle of gasoline on fire using his cigarette, causing a massive explosion. As the yacht erupts in flames, their survival becomes impossible.
Despite this uncertainty, one of the creators, Hayden Schlossberg, is hesitant about the situation, pointing out that no bodies were found which leaves room for speculation. On the other hand, his co-creators, Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz, view the explosion as decisive. They believe that since the yacht had a crew, the immense damage suggests it was highly unlikely anyone survived.
As a devoted fan, I found myself echoing Hayden Schlossberg’s words when he spoke with Entertainment Weekly: “We didn’t catch a glimpse of the bodies! It was quite a wide shot. Given Kreese’s history of resurfacing after being presumed dead, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next.
On the other hand, Schlossberg’s fellow creators, Heald and Hurwitz, held a more skeptical perspective. In an interview, Heald remarked, “Check out that explosion! You know how many crew members are on a yacht? Kreese apparently wiped out around 30 people. They were drenched in gasoline!
According to Hurwitz, they intentionally kept their choices flexible during the production phase of the show. Initially, the producers filmed an alternative finale that didn’t clearly resolve Kreese’s fate. In this version, a magazine cover hinted at Silver’s disappearance and a subsequent shot subtly suggested Kreese’s hand grabbing it, though his presence wasn’t fully revealed.
As a die-hard fan, I must confess that, although there was a brief instant when I thought they might keep it, ultimately, it seemed so implausible that it had to be discarded. Hurwitz admitted, “During production, we realized its absurdity and knew it wouldn’t make the final cut.
Later on, Heald commented, “Much like Hayden, we found it difficult to bid farewell to Kreese. We even entertained the idea of hope. But when we witnessed the explosion, it felt as if everything perished instantly.
Despite the appearance that Kreese met his end with the explosion, the series has a history of unexpected twists. The debate over whether he survived or not contributes to the show’s signature unpredictable nature.
Cobra Kai Season 6 is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
