As a devoted film enthusiast, I can tell you that when Stephen Amell debuted as the Arrow, it felt like watching a cannonball being launched. It was an immense opportunity, but the grueling schedule was relentless. With filming for nearly ten months annually, there was scant time for anything else. In retrospect, I’ll admit that I, much like him, didn’t always manage the stress effectively.
In the initial stages, he held on very tightly, as he put it. To be precise, he was holding on for dear life. By episode five of season one, he had already clocked in more hours than any other project in his career up to that point. Despite this, he maintains that he never behaved rudely or disrespectfully, but he did acknowledge that he could have a temper at times.
In a whirlwind fashion, Amell was omnipresent – interacting with fans online, participating in events, and addressing criticisms head-on. Yet, this close proximity brought about challenges. The series ‘Arrow’ had its share of overly critical viewers, and unfortunately, he allowed their viewpoints to impact him personally.
He also reached out to others to inquire about their feelings. However, his actions ended up escalating the situation instead.
‘Social media can be a competition without any winners, he acknowledges, having learned this lesson the hard way. Despite the often negative online experiences, Amell finds that meeting people face-to-face is a completely different experience. In fact, he approximates that he has met over 100,000 individuals at conventions and recalls just two encounters that were less than pleasant. He emphasizes, “The internet isn’t the real world.”‘
For Amell, it was a tough but valuable lesson—one of many he’s learned under the spotlight.
