Kelly McGillis was not part of the cast for Top Gun: Maverick, alongside Tom Cruise. In an interview with Insider, director Joseph Kosinski discussed why McGillis did not reprise her role from the original film. In the initial Top Gun movie, McGillis played Charlie, a civilian instructor at the Top Gun training program.

During a chat with a media outlet, the director shared that bringing back McGillis wasn’t part of the plan. He explained, “I didn’t want our stories to keep dwelling on the past.” Kosinski also mentioned his preference for introducing fresh characters and new faces in the sequel.

Additionally, McGillis also expressed her feelings about not getting the opportunity to reprise her role in the 2022 movie. Regarding her absence from the silver screen, the actress openly stated in 2022, “They never did, and I don’t believe they ever would… To be frank, I’m older, I’ve gained weight, and I appear to be my actual age, which doesn’t align with what that entire storyline is about.

After achieving significant success early in her acting career, McGillis has chosen to take a break from the entertainment industry. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress expressed, “I prefer to feel completely comfortable and confident in who I am at my age, rather than valuing external factors like fame or accolades.

Furthermore, Top Gun: Maverick notched up as the second-highest earning film of 2022, amassing a staggering worldwide box office total of approximately $1.496 billion.

The storyline of the film can be summarized as follows: With thirty years of experience under his belt, Maverick is tasked with training an elite team of TOPGUN graduates in preparation for a critical mission. Simultaneously, he grapples with his personal struggles from the past.
