Shōgun Season 2: Release Plans and What’s Next for Hiroyuki Sanada’s Epic Series

The highly anticipated second season, followed by a potential third, for the collaborative series “Shōgun” between FX and Hulu has been confirmed. Following the triumph of its debut season, an adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel, creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo are now developing an original extension to the storyline.

Season 1 followed the story of Lord Yoshi Toranaga, a merciless ruler modeled after Tokugawa Ieyasu, along with John Blackthorne, an English castaway, and Lady Toda Mariko, their translator, played by Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, and Anna Sawai respectively. The season finale hinted at more developments in the relationship between Toranaga and Blackthorne, even as it mourned the sad fate of Lady Mariko.

Based on Clavell’s entire book, Season 2 is expected to take its cues from actual historical events, focusing on Toranaga’s rise to power and the establishment of his shogunate. Marks has suggested a shift towards a more somber tone, delving into political machinations and power struggles.

Rachel Kondo expressed to The Hollywood Reporter that the experience has been both thrilling and anxious since it’s new ground with no clear path laid out for us. All we have are historical precedents to guide us.

Meanwhile, Marks told the outlet, “Part two is, as second chapters go, kind of a darker chapter.”

As for the actors returning for Season 2, Deadline confirms that Sanada will reprise his role. However, whether or not Jarvis will appear again has yet to be decided. Regrettably, Anna Sawai’s character Mariko, who perished in the first season, seems unlikely to make a comeback.

In February 2025, Sanada shared with Variety, “For our upcoming Season 2, we’ll be keeping about half of our initial cast members, and bringing in a fresh half. I’m currently on the lookout for an exceptional crew for next season, so I’m really looking forward to it.

Originally produced as a standalone miniseries, the acclaimed and financially successful show “Shōgun” evolved into a three-part series. Creator Monica Marks has confirmed that the third season will serve as a final conclusion.

Although the launch date for Season 2 remains unknown, you can currently stream Season 1 of Shogun on both Hulu and Disney+.
