Award-winning actor Matthew Rhys is set to lead the cast of Apple TV+’s drama series titled “Widow’s Bay,” which is an adaptation of the original Australian show by the same name. Katie Dippold, who serves as executive producer and head writer, will also pen the series for this production.
As reported by Variety, Rhys is not only set to play the leading role but also earns executive producer credits. Meanwhile, Hiro Murai, renowned for his work on Childish Gambino’s “This Is America,” “Guava Island,” among others, will helm the director’s chair and produce as an executive for this pilot.
In September 2024, a 10-episode series is commissioned, following the storyline of a mayor (portrayed by Rhys) in a chilling New England town, who remains unconvinced by the eerie supernatural experiences reported by his local residents who are prone to superstition. The Apple Studios production is co-executive produced by Murai, Claudia Shin, Carver Karaszewski, and Joanne Toll.

Rhys, who won an Emmy for his work on FX’s The Americans, has been sought after for streaming projects. He recently completed filming for the Netflix miniseries “The Beast Inside Me,” co-starring with Claire Danes. Additionally, he will appear in Amazon Prime Video’s “Silent River,” a serial killer thriller that also features John Krasinski.
Rhys additionally worked on the BritBox and BBC1 drama “Towards Zero,” an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s namesake novel, and “Hallow Road,” a film starring Rosamund Pike.
Beyond just appearing on TV, Rhys has made significant strides in cinema as well. His filmography includes titles like The Post, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and Andy Serkis’ Jungle Book. He also portrayed George Carlin in the biopic Saturday Night, which was directed by Jason Reitman.
Prior to directing the Apple TV+ drama series Widow’s Bay, Matthew Rhys previously appeared in the climate change-themed drama titled Extrapolations.
