Matt and Ross Duffer, the masterminds behind Stranger Things, have affirmed that their upcoming Netflix production, The Boroughs, bears numerous resemblances to their successful series.
At SCAD TVFest, the duo disclosed that the forthcoming series shares significant similarities with Stranger Things and is additionally influenced by a popular 1980s science fiction film, reflecting its nostalgic atmosphere.
In a retirement community located in New Mexico, an unlikely band of outcasts discovers a dark supernatural entity that poses a danger to them.
According to Ross Duffer, the series “The Boroughs” is inspired by an original concept from the creative minds behind “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. The Duffers are set to produce the show, with Addiss and Matthews taking on the role of executive producers and showrunners.
Ross Duffer admitted that The Boroughs bears some resemblances to the 1985 Ron Howard movie ‘Cocoon’, yet he emphasized that the underlying ideas are distinct. In contrast to the plot of ‘Cocoon’ where a group of senior citizens stumble upon an extraterrestrial force that restores their youth, The Boroughs offers a unique take on its concepts.
As a connoisseur of unique storytelling, I can confidently say that this upcoming production shares a rich heritage with the beloved series Stranger Things, but it has found its niche within the charming backdrop of a retirement community. The ensemble is nothing short of extraordinary; featuring acting legends like Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, and Bill Pullman.
Ross shared that the concept originated from Addiss and Matthews. He expressed, “I recently watched The Dark Crystal on Netflix, and it was fantastic. So, I approached the puppeteers and asked if they had any other ideas, to which they responded, ‘I’ve had this idea for an elderly character,’ and I replied, ‘That’s intriguing!’ And that project took off quite quickly.
During their conversation about The Boroughs, Matt Duffer mentioned that gaining entry to Cocoon can be tricky due to certain rights complications, as he put it.
Well, I must admit I can’t help you with finding the movie ‘Cocoon’. I did buy a DVD copy of it, but at a rather steep price of $50. Frankly, I don’t quite understand the specifics of the region-coding issues involved in this case. If by any chance Ron Howard happens to read this, I hope he can shed some light on this matter. It’s really perplexing how complicated it seems.
In any event, if you haven’t had a chance to watch ‘Cocoon’, I highly recommend it as an excellent film.
Currently, the creators of Stranger Things are gearing up for the fifth and last season, which is projected to premiere around 2025. Although a specific release date hasn’t been set yet, the Duffers mentioned that they are progressing faster than expected in post-production.
