Colman Domingo clarifies speculations about him stepping into the role of Kang the Conqueror, previously held by Jonathan Majors, within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Majors departed from the character post-“Quantumania”, due to both the film’s reported underperformance and his personal legal issues. However, it is suggested that the poor performance of “Quantumania” may actually be the reason for the MCU not pursuing Kang further. It’s also worth noting that Loki Season 2 concluded Kang’s narrative in a satisfactory manner.
What did Colman Domingo say?
On the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Domingo shared that he’s discussed roles with Marvel, but he made it clear that he doesn’t wish to portray the character Kang.
It appears there were discussions about Domingo potentially joining Marvel in some capacity. As a result, he and his PR team scheduled a meeting with Marvel’s executives to discuss the state of Marvel, as well as the Kang rumors. However, Domingo expresses a desire to have a unique role within the Marvel universe, rather than replacing someone else. He wants to create something new and original for himself instead.
From my perspective, it didn’t feel like a discussion about me taking over Kang. However, what I do know is that if such a discussion did occur, I would have preferred to start something new from scratch. Therefore, it seems there are still ongoing conversations about this matter.
Jonathan Majors not returning as Kang
A more recent speculation suggests that Jonathan Majors might reprise his role as Kang, but TMZ denies this claim. According to their reports, sources close to the production have confirmed that there have been no discussions between Majors and Marvel about a return. Moreover, it’s been stated that Marvel is not contemplating bringing back Jonathan Majors in the MCU at this time.
Who is the next MCU big bad?
In a shift from Kang, Marvel is planning to introduce a new major antagonist for the MCU, which will see Robert Downey Jr. rejoining the universe, but not portraying Iron Man again; instead, he’s rumored to play Doctor Doom. This Doctor Doom might hail from the multiverse, potentially originating from the same world as the Fantastic Four.
I’m absolutely thrilled to share that Marvel revealed at Comic-Con last summer that the legendary Robert Downey Jr. will be reprising his role as Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. The Russo brothers are also back on board! There’s a buzz that RDJ might make his comeback first in this summer’s highly anticipated “The Fantastic Four: The First Steps”, hitting theaters July 25.
