Spoilers ahead for Netflix’s new series The Åre Murders!
As a dedicated follower, I find myself captivated by Netflix’s newest crime drama, “The Åre Murders.” This gripping series is adapted from the acclaimed book series of the same name by Swedish author Viveca Sten. The story unfolds around Hanna Ahlander, a Stockholm police officer who, on the same fateful day, has been suspended from her job and dumped by her boyfriend. Feeling lost and alone, she retreats to her sister’s vacation home in Åre, seeking solace and finding herself embroiled in a series of mysterious murders instead.
When Amanda, a young woman in town, vanishes without a trace, Hanna feels compelled to break rules and delve into the case on her own. She forms an alliance with Daniel Lindskog, the lead investigator from the town. Initially, it seems like a typical murder investigation; however, as they delve deeper, they uncover a much more sinister plot, where each character is motivated by harmful intentions.
Initially, the storyline centers on the disappearance and demise of Amanda during the first three episodes, followed by the last two delving into the murder of ex-skier Johan Andersson, adding an extra veil of mystery and tension. The plot progressively moves from one heartrending event to another, each with its intricate motives.
It turns out that Bosse Risberg, the head of a Non-Governmental Organization focused on missing persons, is Amanda’s killer. In a heated exchange over allegations of human trafficking and forced labor, he reacts violently and ends up killing Amanda in a state of panic.
The identity of Andersson’s killer turned out to be far more complex than expected. When his dismembered remains were discovered on railroad tracks, no one would have imagined that a family member was responsible, yet surprisingly, it was his stepson, Leo.
In response to Andersson’s intention to abandon his mother for another lover, he receives a blow to the head from a shovel. Despite the resolution of legal matters by the conclusion of the series, the complexities in the personal relationships among the main characters continue to be left unexplored.
Regardless of the romantic undertones between Hanna and Daniel across the entire series, Daniel ultimately decides to remain with his spouse and their new baby, effectively ending things with Hanna and leaving her in a solitary position. This reflects Hanna’s initial situation in the show – being alone and cut off from others.
