James Gunn Reveals Hawkgirl’s Unique Organic Wings, Distinguishing Her from Hawkman!

On July 11th, ‘Superman’ is scheduled to hit the screens, marking the debut of several DC Universe superheroes. Among them is Hawkgirl, portrayed by Isabela Merced, whose performance we have already caught glimpses of on set photos and in the trailers for ‘Superman’. It was James Gunn who recently verified that fans have been noticing something intriguing about Merced’s role.

Instead of relying on advanced technology to mimic her wings, DCU’s Hawkgirl possesses genuine feathers that are an integral part of her physical form.

In the DCEU, Aldis Hodge’s character, Hawkman, in ‘Black Adam’ (2022), sported wings that were an extension of his suit, not something naturally attached to him. These wings were a testament to advanced Nth metal technology, a crucial aspect of Hawkman’s comic book background.

The significant distinction in Gunn’s chosen wing design might hint at a unique history for the character as well.

In the DC Comics universe, Hawkgirl’s wings can be shown as either part of her body naturally or mechanical wings powered by an external harness and Nth metal. Gunn’s choice to use organic wings may suggest a portrayal of Hawkgirl that is more deeply rooted in her Thanagarian biology or perhaps a backstory involving metahuman abilities instead of relying on technological equipment.

Viewers noted that, based on the behind-the-scenes photos released thus far, Merced appears not to have wings. This could indicate that they will be digitally incorporated later.
