Based on reports from The Independent and TMZ, it appears that the Twin Peaks director died due to a heart attack caused by obstructive lung disease, as stated in a death certificate issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
The report from TMZ suggests that dehydration played a substantial role in the individual’s death, as stated in a redacted document they provided.

According to People magazine, they shared news about his passing on January 16, 2025, via a post from his family on social networking sites.
The Facebook post conveyed, “A large void has been left since he’s gone, but as he used to say, ‘Focus on the donut rather than the hole.’ Meanwhile, his family wrote, ‘The day is radiantly beautiful with a golden sun and clear blue skies above.’
