It’s possible that the storyline of the beloved “Inside Out” series could continue, as recent conversations between director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen at the Critics’ Choice Awards suggest there might be more to explore in a potential second installment.
Nielsen said, ‘This world is filled with numerous possibilities. There are multiple paths you can take, and a wealth of emotions to discover. Riley’s journey still has more stages ahead, but remember, nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet.’ In simpler terms, there are many roads to explore, lots of feelings to uncover, and Riley’s story may not be over, but for now, nothing is set in stone.
He mentioned that there are no current projects ongoing, but given the impressive success of the previous movie, it certainly appears that another film would be a logical move forward.
2024 saw Inside Out 2 shattering box office records upon its release. The movie astonishingly earned a staggering $1.699 billion globally, securing its position as the biggest money-maker among all animated films ever made. Given Disney‘s knack for capitalizing on success, it seems unlikely they would let this lucrative franchise remain idle.
In addition, Mann hinted at potential future developments, saying, ‘There are numerous feelings we experimented with that didn’t quite fit. Therefore, there are definitely unused emotions waiting for possible future projects.’
In the sequel to Inside Out, I found myself encountering fresh emotions such as Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui, while familiar faces like Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), and Anger (Lewis Black) continued their colorful existence. A new addition to Riley’s mindscape was the character Nostalgia, played by June Squibb, who fondly reminisced about Riley’s cherished memories from childhood.
Initially, the film was intended to carry a more somber, or potentially gloomy, mood. This is because an initial draft incorporated an emotional aspect named Shame, symbolizing severe self-judgment. Nevertheless, this addition proved too intense, causing the production team to abandon the concept.
To ensure that Inside Out 2 connected well with its audience, Mann adopted a unique strategy – he previewed various versions of the movie to actual teenagers and incorporated their responses to mold the plot. This tactic undeniably proved effective.
At the moment, both “Inside Out” and “Inside Out 2” can be streamed on Disney+. However, it’s just a question of when Disney decides to act next.
