STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Co-Creator Bryan Fuller Dishes on His Brief Time Running the Series

The series “Star Trek: Discovery,” inaugurating the streaming phase of “Star Trek” in 2017, concluded after five seasons last year. However, the show that aired was markedly distinct from Bryan Fuller‘s original plan for it. When Paramount announced the show in 2016, they also revealed Fuller as the showrunner, making it the first “Trek” series since “Enterprise” ended a decade earlier. Unfortunately, Fuller eventually departed the project, but he still holds credit as co-creator. So what might have been? In an interview on “The D-Con Chamber Podcast,” Fuller divulged some insights into his concept for “Discovery,” which you can watch him discuss in the video below:

It seems he wasn’t fond of the Starfleet uniforms reminiscent of blue tracksuits they finally chose, and he disliked the revamped Klingons they actually implemented. The revised Klingons turned out to be so disliked that Strange New Worlds (a spin-off of Discovery) reverted back to the original Klingon makeup without providing any explanation. Interestingly, he imagined Lawrence Fishburne in a Klingon role, which could have been brilliant casting if realized. Someone should consider bringing this idea to life.

Castings that didn’t materialize for Star Trek: Discovery included Richard Armitage as Sarek, Spock’s father, and Gillian Anderson as a Starfleet Captain. Additionally, Bryan Fuller considered Hugh Dancy for an undisclosed role. However, he did acknowledge his involvement in casting Michelle Yeoh as Georgiou, as well as advocating for Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham. These decisions proved beneficial for the series. In his original plans for Discovery, Anthony Rapp’s character was intended to be a blue-skinned Andorian, which makes one wonder if this character later transformed into Hemmer, the Andorian Engineer in Strange New Worlds.

Legacy will finally get the go-ahead at long last – something that Star Trek fans have been hoping for all this time.
