Sydney Sweeney is currently one of the most well-known up-and-coming actresses in the industry today. She initially captured attention in 2018 through her performances in ‘Everything Sucks!’, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, and ‘Sharp Objects.’ However, it was her roles in HBO’s ‘Euphoria’ and ‘The White Lotus’ in 2019 that made her a household name, earning her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
In the upcoming biopic, Sweeney is set to take on the role of renowned boxer Christy Martin. As a result, she’s putting herself through rigorous physical preparation for the part.
Exclusively through TMZ, pictures and videos have been acquired showing Sydney Sweeney engaging in a boxing match with Christy Martin, a true-life boxing icon. The clips depict Sweeney practicing and good-naturedly trading blows with Martin as she readies herself for her role in an upcoming movie about this previous titleholder.
The images capture Sydney Sweeney amidst a movie set, donning a crisp white jacket, perched on a vintage ’90s sofa, and surrounded by an original Sports Illustrated issue with her image gracing the cover. This setup seems to symbolize a significant scene in the film, possibly depicting Christy Martin at the zenith of her celebrity. In actuality, Christy was showcased on the Sports Illustrated cover back in 1996, an event that significantly boosted women’s boxing into prominence.
In the upcoming Christy Martin biography, Ben Foster takes on the roles of both Christy’s husband and trainer, James V. Martin. Merritt Wever is cast as Joyce Salters, while Katy O’Brian portrays boxer Lisa Holewyne. Ethan Embry and Jess Gabor are John Salters and Sherry Lusk respectively. The ensemble also includes Chad L. Coleman as the renowned boxing promoter Don King and Tony Cavalero as James Maloney.
The movie will be overseen by a team of producers including Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, David Michôd, Justin Lothrop, Brent Stiefel, Sydney Sweeney, and Teddy Schwarzman. Michael Heimler, John Friedberg, Mirrah Foulkes, Brad Zimmerman, David Levine, Ryan Schwartz, and Nick Shumaker will serve as executive producers for the project.
The film production is handled by companies such as Anonymous Content, Yoki Inc., Votiv, Fifty-Fifty Films, and Black Bear Pictures. Principal photography commenced on September 30, 2024, in North Carolina, wrapping up by November 15, 2024.
