He’s gathering an elite group of actors from around the world to bring Homer’s “The Odyssey” to life on screen. Many of the actors who will star in this high-budget, blockbuster film have already been announced. However, we don’t yet know which roles each actor will play. For instance, we don’t know if Zendaya will portray Athena, Circe, Telemachus, Tiresias, or one of the Suitors in the movie. We can only speculate about who might take on these roles in Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of “The Odyssey”.

Matt Damon as Odysseus

For years, she has skillfully deceived her suitors into believing they can exploit her weakness, when in fact, she is patiently biding her time to avoid marrying any of them. The role demands an actress who can convincingly portray both tender vulnerability and unyielding resilience – qualities that Anne Hathaway possesses in spades, making her the ideal choice for Penelope.

Tom Holland as Telemachus

In the epic poem “The Odyssey” by Homer, Telemachus, son of Odysseus, plays a significant role alongside his father. He embarks on a quest to find his long-lost dad. Despite being young at just twenty years old, Telemachus demonstrates ambition and nobility. If you picture Tom Holland in this role, he still fits the bill perfectly as he did in “The Crowded Room.” This character needs an actor who can hold their own among legendary parents, and Holland is undoubtedly up to the task. Should Christopher Nolan cast him as Telemachus, it’s possible we might see a reemergence of Holland’s distinctive hairdo from “The Crowded Room.

Lupita Nyong’o as Circe

One standout character from Homer’s “The Odyssey” is the bewitching goddess Circe. She turns Odysseus’ crew into swine, holds them captive for a year, and remains captivating throughout. Few witches in literature compare to her intrigue, making her a role that demands an equally compelling actress. Lupita Nyong’o, with her Academy Award-winning talent, would be ideal for the part of Circe in Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation. She would undoubtedly bring the character to life in a remarkable way.

Benny Safdie as Polyphemus

In a more natural and easy-to-read manner: Polyphemus is the enormous, simple-minded, man-devouring cyclops, son of Poseidon, whom Odysseus blinds to escape his cave. It’s Odysseus’ overconfidence following this audacious act that results in him being lost at sea for ten long years. Polyphemus is both amusingly foolish and awe-inspiring in his character. He towers not only physically but also symbolically within the tale, and Benny Safdie demonstrated in Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” why he is the ideal actor to portray this role in “The Odyssey.

Himesh Patel as Aeolus

In Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, the minor yet crucial part played by the Greek deity of winds, Aeolus, is significant. He assists Odysseus by confining all the seas’ winds within a bag, except for the one essential for Odysseus to return home. Unfortunately, when his apprehensive crew opened the bag as they sighted Ithaca’s coastline, they were sent back to Aeolus, leading him to perceive that Odysseus is under a divine curse and unwilling to aid him again. Patel would be perfect for portraying a benevolent character who understands when it’s best to step aside in the presence of a more powerful deity.

Robert Pattinson as The Ghost of Achilles

In a creative twist of events, despite perishing during the Trojan War, Homer managed to resurrect the legendary warrior Achilles for the sequel. Imagine the uproar on ancient Greek poetry forums! They surely would have been outraged by the excessive “fan service” in The Odyssey. In Nolan’s upcoming film, it is Robert Pattinson who brings life to the role of a beautiful, otherworldly, brooding hero. The actual Achilles wouldn’t be as fitting for the part, and let’s face it, would likely prove challenging to work with.

Samantha Morton as Anticleia 

In reference to enigmatic characters, it’s intriguing to consider Samantha Morton from “The Walking Dead” being brought to life as a literal embodiment of death in Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of “The Odyssey”. Her captivating portrayal of a precog in “Minority Report” makes her an excellent candidate for playing the deceased mother of King Odysseus, Anticleia. Although she may appear too youthful to embody the dead matriarch of Ithaca’s ruler, spirits can assume any age they wish in the underworld of Hades.

Bill Irwin as Laertes

In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus’ other parent, Laertes, is not only alive but also in peril. Bill Irwin, a seasoned actor with a rich career, seems an ideal choice to portray this character. Although Laertes may be frail now, he carries a significant presence due to his history as one of the Argonauts who assisted Jason in acquiring the Golden Fleece. It would be fascinating to see Bill Irwin take on the role of Laertes in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie adaptation of “The Odyssey”.

Zendaya as Calypso

Is it intriguing to imagine Tom Holland’s real-life partner portraying his on-screen father in a captivity scenario for seven years? Absolutely. However, this doesn’t diminish the fact that Zendaya is an excellent fit for the role of Calypso from Ogygia. Calypso needs to be irresistibly alluring and stunningly beautiful to make us comprehend why Odysseus isn’t as eager to return home as he should be. Being stranded on an island with Zendaya would certainly explain that easily.

Elliot Page – Hermes

In my perspective, it was Hermes, the swift-footed messenger of Olympus and the cunning trickster, who carried out Athena’s command to persuade Calypso to free Odysseus. Additionally, he cautioned Odysseus about Circe and provided him with a protective herb to safeguard him from her enchanting pig potion. Playing Hermes in our upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey, we believe Elliot Page is an excellent choice due to his ability to embody the swiftness and agility that this role demands.

John Leguizamo as Eumaeus

As a fan, I can’t help but admire John Leguizamo’s versatility in acting. Though it’s tempting to envision him as one of Penelope’s boorish suitors, draining her resources with endless feasts and drinks, I believe he could excel in a completely different role instead. In my opinion, he would make an excellent choice for Eumaeus, the swineherd in Homer’s “The Odyssey.”

Eumaeus is not only a loyal friend to Odysseus but also takes great care of Penelope and Telemachus during their trying times. He spends years defending them against the suitors before ultimately aiding Odysseus in his final victory. Given Leguizamo’s acting prowess, I am confident that he could convincingly portray such a character.

Jon Bernthal as Antious

In a similar vein, everything that applies to John Leguizamo can be said about Jon Bernthal. He has the versatility to portray a wide range of characters, from charming personalities we’d enjoy seeing humbled by their own arrogance, to despicable figures that instantly make us cringe. Therefore, it seems fitting that he would be cast as Antonymous in The Odyssey, a character who is intensely disliked the moment his smug mouth opens. As the most detestable of Penelope’s many suitors, Antonymous is a role that Bernthal could excel in, making us loathe him even more. We eagerly anticipate seeing this portrayal.

Charlize Theron as Athena

….Is there any other actress who might convincingly portray the dual roles of both the Greek goddess of war and wisdom? Could it be that Charlize Theron is, in fact, Athena? The Greek deities were known to disguise themselves as humans. Perhaps Odysseus’ guardian and champion has been patiently waiting for this chance – a chance to portray herself on the silver screen.

Could that be just a rough estimate? Indeed, it’s hard to predict what roles Athena or even Charlize Theron might take on, given their versatility. Until Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey cast members’ specific roles are revealed, we can only speculate.
