In the last few episodes of the new season of Cobra Kai, things took a dramatic and chaotic turn during the Sekai Taikai tournament. The clash between rival dojos escalated into a full-blown fight, and in the midst of it all, Kwon Jae-Sung (Brandon H. Lee) attacked Sam LaRusso (Mary Mouser). However, Axel Kovačević (Patrick Luwis), who had formed a bond with Sam earlier, intervened to protect her.
In the heat of the battle, Kwon attempted to wield Martin Kove’s eunjangdo sword, but slipped and unintentionally pierced himself instead. This unexpected incident left viewers stunned and paved the way for a thrilling conclusion to the series.
As Patrick Luwis, the talented actor portraying Axel, I’d like to share my thoughts about that pivotal scene. Initially, I wasn’t explicitly informed about how the story would unfold. All I had were the initial scripts, and whispers hinted at my character’s connection to Kwon’s demise. When I finally laid eyes on the complete script, I grasped the magnitude of that moment. The series has always been action-packed, but this sequence surpassed everything we’d seen before. With so many characters intertwining their stories, it was a complex and overwhelming experience to absorb.
When queried about the response of fans towards Axel’s involvement in Kwon’s demise, Lewis acknowledged that opinions were diverse. ‘Some viewers argue he wasn’t to blame, suggesting Kwon was responsible for his own fate. Others are disappointed about losing a cherished character and consequently blame Axel. I believe this is beneficial, as it encourages discussion among the audience.’
As I immersed myself in the vibrant world of this film production, I had the privilege of collaborating alongside the seasoned actor, Lewis Tan. Witnessing his craft up close was a masterclass in itself. The sheer energy and intensity he brought to every scene served as a constant inspiration, driving me to elevate my own performance. Working with such a talented individual was an extraordinary learning opportunity that I will carry forward throughout my career.
As Axel appears to take an interest in Sam, viewers ponder if there might be a possibility for him and her, given her current bond with Miguel (Xolo Maridueña). Lewis remained impartial. ‘I was willing to accommodate whatever the story required. I didn’t want to be the one disrupting the show’s central couple, but I believe the relationship between Axel and Sam introduced an intriguing element.’
Kwon’s passing is set to leave a significant mark on the upcoming episodes, particularly affecting Axel. It marks an unprecedented moment in the series as we witness the demise of a young character, and this event promises to reshape the narrative. There’s a lot of personal development in store for Axel, and I believe fans will be intrigued by where his storyline unfolds next.
Regarding future developments, Louis expresses enthusiasm for delving deeper into Axel’s tale. A spin-off focusing on the Iron Dragons could be intriguing. Perhaps even a prequel is in store. It’s unclear what the creators have up their sleeves, but Louis would eagerly jump at the opportunity to revisit that world.
