Fans of romantic comedies can breathe easy even in this era filled with endless horror series and reboots. Unexpectedly, a mayonnaise commercial has brought us back to life! Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal have reunited for a Super Bowl advertisement, which also features an unexpected contemporary guest in the rom-com genre. These stars from the defining romantic comedy of the ’80s, “When Harry Met Sally,” recreated their famous diner scene with a creative twist featuring Hellmann’s, and you can watch the Super Bowl ad right here.
In the movie, much like Harry and Sally sitting at Katz’s Delicatessen enjoying a meal, Sally starts annoying Harry. But instead of her pretending to climax to show Harry it can be done, she genuinely seems to do so, all thanks to the incredible taste of Hellmann’s mayonnaise on her sandwich.
Hellmann’s introduced an extra surprise element, piling on even more nostalgia! Sydney Sweeney, renowned for her role in the 2023 romantic comedy “Anyone but You,” makes a memorable cameo by reenacting the iconic line, “I’ll have what she’s having.” After witnessing that act, I must confess, I would be inclined to say the same too.
Sweeney was thrilled to collaborate with renowned romantic comedy stars Crystal and Ryan, expressing, “it was truly an honor to work alongside the legendary Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal on this nostalgic and laugh-out-loud ad. When Harry Met Sally is a timeless rom-com masterpiece, and blending Hellmann’s into the mix made perfect sense, making my decision to join the project effortless. I can hardly wait for everyone to catch it during the Big Game!
You can watch the original scene below to refresh your memory of the film.
The actors were thrilled that fans of the movie “When Harry Met Sally” would get to see them reenact the iconic scene. Meg Ryan commented, “Being with Billy again and slipping back into the character of Sally was a delight.” She also added, “I hope fans will enjoy revisiting this scene, especially with its special update – Hellmann’s mayo as the new star!
The 30-second Hellmann’s Super Bowl advertisement arrives perfectly, as it honors the movie’s 35th anniversary. Apart from the scene and dialogue, the ad also contains Easter eggs that enthusiasts of the movie will spot. For instance, Crystal’s white cable knit sweater, which he wore in the film.
Billy Crystal found it an obvious choice to visit Katz’s Deli with Meg again. This is all thanks to Hellmann’s, who thought up the idea and wrote a hilarious advertisement for it. As a result, we’re adding some laughter and nostalgia to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of When Harry Met Sally during this year’s Big Game.
Lovers of romantic comedies can visit the Katz’s Delicatessen website between now and February 9th to order the “What She’s Having” sandwich package. Priced at $120, this kit serves four to six people and includes a step-by-step guide on how to prepare Sally’s legendary sandwich.
I’ll go ahead and place the order for a quick bite as I watch this movie again for what feels like the thousandth time. Meg Ryan, truly an iconic figure, you embody the essence of the moment.
