1997’s “Con Air” delivered everything we adore about action films: massive explosions, exhilarating brawls, witty one-liners, and an outstanding performance by none other than Nicolas Cage. The movie, skillfully directed by Simon West, has stood the test of time and remains a beloved summer blockbuster even today.
For several members of the team, it was onto new ventures, yet “Con Air” continues to be a pivotal professional milestone for many. This applies to West as well, who has often toyed with the notion of a sequel. Now, there’s one significant factor that could make him seriously reconsider returning.
Over the years, the West has established a robust reputation for directing thrilling action movies. He’s given us hits like “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” “When a Stranger Calls,” and “Wild Card,” demonstrating his knack for keeping viewers engaged. His upcoming project, titled “Old Guy,” promises more high-octane action with Academy Award-winning actor Christoph Waltz and Cooper Hoffman portraying an unconventional duo of contract killers.
The movie was recently screened at the Newport Beach Film Festival, during which West engaged in a chat. Predictably, the discussion veered towards his previous projects, eventually touching upon the topic of Con Air 2.
The director has expressed his readiness: should Nicolas Cage wish to reprise the role of Cameron Poe, he’s more than welcome. He shared, “Absolutely! I’d be up for any collaboration with Nic Cage. I’m a big admirer of Nic Cage. I have a deep fondness for the movie Con Air, and I believe he feels the same way. We’ve discussed it before, and if we can get everything right – a fantastic script, bringing back as many original cast members as possible – I think it would be an enjoyable experience.
A while back, West proposed an outlandish concept for the sequel. He envisioned Con Air 2 either set in space or starring superpowered criminals. Currently, however, he’s leaving all possibilities on the table. “Yes, that was merely one idea,” he clarified.
‘There are numerous possibilities – it might be located under the ocean, out in space, or even in another dimension. Regardless, if it’s engaging and enjoyable, similar to the original, I believe that people wouldn’t care much about its location.’
Recently, Cage has been busy with follow-ups to several movies. He’s slated for both Face/Off 2 and Lord of War 2, and there’s a chance he might also star in Con Air 2. However, producing a sequel isn’t just about having a fantastic concept; it requires more than that.
As a film enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating the potential collaboration between Nicholas Cage and director Wes Anderson once again. Overcoming challenges such as reuniting the cast and crafting a compelling script will certainly be no easy feat. Yet, with the infectious energy of Wes and Cage’s knack for daring roles, there’s always that glimmer of hope. For now, all we can do is keep our fingers crossed and wait patiently to witness if this dream project becomes a reality.
