Miramax Is Bringing Back Beloved Sci-Fi Horror ‘The Faculty’ with a New Remake

Miramax is planning to revive the 1998 sci-fi thriller hit, “The Faculty,” which gained cult status over time. The upcoming version will have Robert Rodriguez, the original director, involved in production.

The screenplay is penned by Drew Hancock, an emerging talent whose first movie, “Companion,” is set to premiere in theaters this weekend. His work has garnered positive early feedback. The reboot, however, is being developed by BoulderLight Productions, known for their productions like “Barbarian” and Zach Cregger’s upcoming horror flick, “Weapons.

The initial film focused on a band of teenagers from their high school who discovered that their teachers and staff were concealing a horrifying truth. It boasted a screenplay by Kevin Williamson and starred Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood, Clea DuVall, Jordana Brewster, Shawn Hatosy, Usher Raymond, and Jon Stewart in his days before hosting the Daily Show.

The film earned $63.2 million at the box office and has maintained a loyal fan base over the years.

Rodriguez has been keeping quite occupied lately, with him directing the Netflix film “Spy Kids: Armageddon” as well as the thriller “Hypnotic,” led by Ben Affleck. Some of his other notable works include “El Mariachi,” “Sin City,” and “From Dusk Till Dawn.

Miramax, formerly led by Bill Block, has undergone some shifts with Jonathan Glickman stepping up as the new CEO. The company’s primary focus now is on revitalizing its impressive film library, encompassing titles like “Chicago,” “No Country for Old Men,” “The English Patient,” and “Scary Movie.” As for “Scary Movie,” a fresh take on this classic is currently in the works, with plans to release it in 2026.
