Sony Pulls the Plug on Highly Anticipated Marvel Movie!

Sony has officially canceled a planned release date for an untitled Marvel movie.

In a recent update, we received information from Deadline regarding Sony’s release plan, indicating they’ve postponed the release date for one of their Marvel movies.

Sony announced tonight that they have cancelled the June 27, 2025 release date for an unnamed Sony-Marvel film.

What was the movie?

It’s my guess that the Sony Marvel film might have been “El Muerto,” the Spider-Man spinoff initially featuring Bad Bunny. As far as I can recall, no other Sony Marvel movie was in development at the time, given that the “Venom” series concluded with its third installment and there were no announced sequels for “Morbius,” “Madame Web,” or “Kraven.

It seems that the project titled “El Muerto” has had its share of ups and downs. Initially, there were reports that it was back on track, but without the involvement of Bad Bunny. However, it looks like this collaboration will not materialize after all.

Additionally, there were discussions regarding a potential Sinister Six film, possibly featuring Silver Sable and/or Black Cat, yet neither of these plans seem to be moving forward at the moment.

What happened with Sony Marvel?

As a devoted cinephile, let me express that the Sony Marvel cinematic universe has seemingly crumbled for me. Frankly, only the initial Venom film managed to captivate my interest, and even then, it was merely satisfactory. The box office numbers speak for themselves, with the first Venom raking in an impressive $856 million, while its subsequent films (which I found abysmal) barely scraped together or fell short of half a billion dollars each.

Indeed, the film “Morbius” earned a substantial $167 million at the box office. Unfortunately, “Madame Web” failed miserably, earning just $100 million. To add to that, the release of “Kraven” this past December was met with little success, bringing in only $61 million.

What happened is that Sony Marvel didn’t respect the source material or the fans.

What has Sony said?

A Sony executive, who might be contemplating retirement, expressed his view that both Kraven and Madame Web were strong films. He believes the disappointing box office performance was due to the media’s reluctance to support movies featuring these characters without Spider-Man in the lead role.

The exec in charge of Sony Marvel has also exited Sony.

What’s next for Sony Marvel?

Based on various sources and speculations, it appears that Sony’s focus for future Marvel projects will primarily revolve around producing “Spider-Man 4” and the next installment of the “Spider-Verse” series.

It’s been reported that Sony will primarily concentrate on the “Spider-Man” franchise, encompassing various iterations of the character, including the “Spider-Noir” series starring Nicholas Cage and potentially others in the Spider-Man multiverse.
