From the very start of the premiere episode titled “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man‘s ‘Amazing Fantasy’,” we may have received a hint about additional spider-themed superheroes appearing in the series. In the opening scene, we witness an unusual take on the traditional Spidey origin story. On his first day at Midtown School of Science and Technology, instead of being bitten by a genetically enhanced spider during a field trip, a portal from the sky suddenly opens, releasing an alien symbiote creature that attacks the school. Doctor Strange then intervenes to stop it. However, another creature, this time a spider, emerges from the same portal and bites Peter Parker, granting him his powers.
Immediately afterward, the spider scurries from Peter Parker’s body. Later, we witness it slither into the backpack of an unidentified Midtown High student, whose gender and other characteristics remain unknown due to the camera angle. Given Marvel Comics’ past, this spider is likely to bite the owner of that backpack, bestowing upon them unique spider-like abilities. However, the question remains: who could be the backpack’s owner? We’ve narrowed it down to three potential Spider-characters. Let’s explore the possible spidery candidates.
Silk (Cindy Moon)
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve always been intrigued by the lore of comic book characters, and Spider-Man is no exception. In an interesting twist, the creators eventually unveiled that the spider which bit Peter Parker wasn’t a solitary arachnid; it also bit another student on the same field trip – Cindy Moon, a Korean-American girl. Unlike Peter, Cindy kept her powers hidden for years before stepping into the limelight as Silk in adulthood. Remarkably, it was the same spider that gave both Peter and Cindy their extraordinary abilities. However, unlike Peter, she possesses organic webbing and a more robust spider-sense.
Unfortunately, a live-action series centered around Silk, titled “Spider Society,” was in development but was unfortunately shelved last year. This leaves the character open for potential introduction in upcoming seasons of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.” Given her unique origins and powers, Cindy Moon is certainly a strong candidate to be the mystery owner of that backpack. Here’s hoping we get to see more of Silk soon!
Miles Morales
Another plausible candidate who might own the backpack could be Miles Morales, a character whose age in this particular universe isn’t specified yet, but given his comic book and Spider-Verse film appearances, he is noticeably younger than Peter Parker. In this storyline, which bears resemblance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Sacred Timeline, Miles Morales has already been introduced in the MCU. A minor criminal character named Aaron Davis (portrayed by Donald Glover) has mentioned having a young nephew. Since we know that nephew is Miles, it’s possible the backpack belongs to a future version of Spider-Man, potentially Miles Morales. However, since he might be around Peter Parker’s age when referred to as “young,” it remains unclear if he’s older or younger than the current Spider-Man. It’s speculated that Sony Animation may be holding off on introducing Miles until his standalone trilogy is completed.
Gwen Stacy (Ghost Spider)
In a different universe, the character known as Gwen Stacy isn’t just Peter Parker’s love interest; she’s also the one who was bitten by the spider that granted him superpowers. This version of Gwen, often called Spider-Gwen or Ghost Spider, usually resides in a reality where Peter never developed his heroic alter ego. However, it’s possible that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man could introduce an alternate Gwen who was bitten by the same enhanced spider, gaining powers similar to his. This approach hasn’t been used in comics or animation before, but it might be something we see with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
Absolutely, that spider could potentially visit each of them and bite them. In upcoming seasons, we may see several Spider-characters, all around the same age as Peter Parker, who all have his secret identity. They might decide to change the series title to Spider-Man and His Fantastic Teammates. It seems that Peter Parker is going to be hanging out with some intriguing characters soon.
