The voice actor responsible for portraying Peter Parker/Spidey in the forthcoming Disney+ “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” animated series has stated that the series isn’t focused on contemporary social issues or progressive ideologies (i.e., it’s not politically woke).
Speaking with Collider, Hudson Thames, said the following:
Initially, I anticipated it might be bothersome and dull, but to my surprise, it turned out to be quite engaging. In fact, contrary to my expectations, it wasn’t boring or tedious at all. Instead, it resonated with me deeply, as if the narrative was unfolding in real life. As the eldest of five brothers, I have a certain understanding of their experiences and high school dynamics. I felt that the portrayal accurately captured these aspects, making it even more enjoyable for me.
Is Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man woke?
According to Hudson Thames, the show might give off an impression of being progressive or inclusive. This is suggested by changes such as swapping the racial identities of Norman and Harry Osborn, with Harry appearing to be gay or transgender, and the inclusion of numerous diverse characters in the cast.
In the comics, the characters are not POC, gay, trans, or DEI.
Often, when creators reimagine stories by altering characters or their original context, it’s done with an intention to convey a “message,” a contemporary perspective often considered progressive or socially aware. Over the past few years, this approach, which some might call ‘wokeness,’ has become quite prevalent in Hollywood productions.
Fans have completely rejected the woke nonsense
It appears fans have firmly dismissed the perceived woke content as productions like Disney’s Star Wars and Marvel have fallen short. Even Doctor Who has faced challenges, and the list doesn’t stop there. The latest reports show that viewership for both Star Wars and Marvel underperformed last year. Fans seem to be looking for high-quality entertainment without any underlying agendas.
Rewording the sentence in a more neutral and conversational manner: Why change the race of Harry and Norman Osborn, as well as Green Goblin? This seems to disregard years of established history and contributions from renowned creators. It’s unclear what purpose this serves other than perhaps satisfying some contemporary perspectives on representation in media. If that’s the case, it might be a matter of preference and not everyone may agree with it, so one could consider switching to another channel if it doesn’t align with personal taste.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man premiers Jan. 29 on Disney+ with its first two episodes.
