Ethan Hawke Reflects on a ‘Great Night’ at Sundance As Before Sunrise Turns 30

Ethan Hawke is commemorating the 30-year milestone of the iconic 1995 romantic drama “Before Sunrise,” a film which significantly launched director Richard Linklater’s acclaimed trilogy, “Before.

On Monday, January 27 (today), at age 54, Hawke marked the anniversary by looking back on old times in an Instagram post, showcasing three photos with his Before Sunrise co-star Julie Delpy and director Richard Linklater. He fondly recalled the night Sundance founder Robert Redford presented their film, calling it a truly special occasion.

30 years ago, our film Before Sunrise premiered at Sundance, with Redford personally introducing it. What a memorable evening it was!

In the realm of cinematic art, I found myself captivated by a film titled “Before Sunrise,” which graced our screens in 1995. This remarkable production introduced me to an American traveler named Jesse, who embarked on a serendipitous encounter with a French student, Céline. Their chance meeting in Europe blossomed into a profound connection that resonated so deeply it spawned two sequels: “Before Sunset” in 2004 and “Before Midnight” in 2013. These masterpieces offered glimpses into Jesse and Céline’s lives at different stages, offering a poignant exploration of their evolving relationship over the years.

Topher Grace, an actor, stated in his comments that he considers the Before trilogy to be the greatest trilogy ever made. Known for its authentic dialogues and profound emotional impact, this film series has consistently been admired by movie enthusiasts.

Despite talks about another chapter in the series, Delpy stated in 2021 that she, Hawke, and Linklater hadn’t found a compelling concept to continue Jesse and Celine’s narrative.

Delpy states that the trio concurred on the idea of creating another work only if it met or surpassed the artistic quality of their previous three films, he said.

Julie Delpy explained to Variety that the three of us couldn’t find a satisfactory concept for a fourth film. In essence, it boils down to that fact. There was no disagreement, and our relationship remains unchanged. Everyone is content. It seems there’s unnecessary drama surrounding the decision when in reality, we simply couldn’t come up with an excellent idea.

Currently, viewers can watch Before Sunrise featuring Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, and Andrea Eckert on Netflix’s streaming platform.
