As a devoted film enthusiast, when the name Sherlock Holmes is mentioned, an iconic image of the character immediately springs to mind – and so does Watson. There’s also that one actor who invariably comes to my mind when it comes to Sherlock Holmes’ arch-nemesis, Moriarty. For me, it has always been Andrew Scott, who brought his A-game opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC’s rendition of Sherlock Holmes, ‘Sherlock’.
However, the landscape is about to change with a new interpretation of the beloved detective story, CBS’ ‘Watson’. The casting of Moriarty in this series was an unexpected twist that they didn’t reveal until after its debut. But who is stepping into the sinister shoes of Moriarty in ‘Watson’, joining the impressive roster of actors? None other than Randall Park, a name you may not have associated with Moriarty before, but rest assured, he’s more than ready to leave his mark on this iconic role.
Towards the closing moments of the debut episode of “Watson”, it’s unveiled that Randall Park is the actor portraying Moriarty. In this role, Park’s Moriarty collects a batch of DNA samples from fellow associate and Holmes-Watson acquaintance Shinwell Johnson. Some might find it unexpected that amiable actor Randall Park would play Moriarty. Indeed, they would be correct. The creator of “Watson”, Craig Sweeny, shared the surprising twist in the casting of Moriarty:
There’s been a surge of interest from notable actors regarding the role of Moriarty, yet many traditional villain enthusiasts feel skeptical. What piqued my curiosity was the concept of dramatically altering his character – what if Randall Park’s friendly demeanor and charming smile, which are genuinely authentic, were merely a facade concealing something far more malevolent?
I found the writing task intriguing, particularly how it developed Moriarty’s character and the performer as well. I reached out and asked if he’d be interested, and there was immediate interest. Although negotiations were necessary, we’re lucky because it turned out to be a yes. He appears frequently throughout the season.
Regarding why Sweeny decided to keep Randall Park’s portrayal of Moriarty a secret until the show premiered, he explains that his primary goal is to provide an enjoyable experience for the audience. He believes that the show has a compelling concept that would draw viewers regardless, and the unexpected twist of seeing Moriarty, but with Randall Park in the role, which Sweeny finds to be an intriguing choice, was something he found appealing as a surprise and shock factor.
And judging by audience reaction, it was a fun shock indeed.

As a devoted fan, I can’t hide my excitement about Randall Park’s Moriarty making a significant appearance this season on Watson! In an exclusive chat, the creators shared some fascinating insights. Regarding his connection with Watson, they hinted that Moriarty isn’t hostile towards him, but rather shows keen interest in the work Watson is doing at the clinic. Specifically, the DNA samples collected there seem to pique Moriarty’s curiosity and hold a potential use for him, not in some grand scheme, but more as a focused pursuit. This rendition of Moriarty doesn’t appear to harbor a grudge against anyone, but his fascination with Watson’s work is undeniable.
Randall Park’s portrayal of Moriarty won’t cross paths with Sherlock Holmes at this time, as Sherlock is currently absent, although it’s uncertain if he’s truly deceased or not (who knows!). We’re excited to see how the casting of Park unfolds and what transpires between Moriarty, Watson, and the others.
