‘Legend of Zelda’ Manga Authors to Release Their New Series, ‘Kamudo,’ In Print

The pen name Akira Himekawa, creators behind several manga adaptations of the beloved game series, The Legend of Zelda, are venturing into uncharted waters with their latest original work titled Kamudo. Since the 90s, this duo has been transforming iconic Nintendo games such as Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Twilight Princess into captivating manga stories.

The artistry and narrative in this realm known as Zelda have enthralled many, enriching its universe with layers of depth and complexity.

Initially, Himekawa playfully introduced “Kamudo” as a project in 2017, during the completion of their work on “Twilight Princess”, which was finally concluded in early 2022 following 11 volumes and 58 chapters spread over approximately 5 years. The serialization of “Kamudo” commenced in autumn of 2024, with Viz Media simultaneously releasing an English version.

In a realm of enchantment, we encounter the story of Kamudo. Here, demi-dragons once maintained harmony until a human, born from a magical egg, appeared on the scene. This unique individual, known as Kamuna, eventually poses a danger to the delicate balance of this world.

The narrative combines mythical beings with exciting exploits, thus forming a distinctive world reminiscent of Zelda yet uniquely its own in atmosphere.

Through their extensive experience in adapting the Zelda series, Himekawa has demonstrated a knack for creating immersive fantasy realms. Their interpretation of Link and Midna’s bond in Twilight Princess was particularly noteworthy, garnering acclaim for adding layers to the characters that surpassed their game counterparts.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the extraordinary artistry that this duo brings to the table. Their meticulous attention to detail breathes life into each character, imbuing them with unique personalities that leap off the screen. Furthermore, they masterfully capture the essence of Zelda’s legendary settings, transforming them from mere backdrops into living, breathing worlds that transport us into a magical realm.

With Kamudo, Himekawa now has the liberty to weave their unique tale, no longer bound by Nintendo’s content. Although this new series isn’t another Zelda, it offers a similar thrill of adventure and exploration. For fans who appreciated Himekawa’s Zelda interpretations, Kamudo could be the upcoming fantasy sensation you’ve been waiting for.
