Karla Sofía Gascón made history as the inaugural openly trans actress to receive an Oscar nomination in the Best Actress category.
In a groundbreaking moment, the talented Spanish actress was announced as one of the nominees for Best Actress at the 2025 Academy Awards, which will take place later this year, in recognition of her exceptional performance in Emilia Pérez.
At 52 years old, she is surrounded by formidable contenders for the best actress award. Gascón will be up against Cynthia Erivo (from Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here).
Emilia Pérez narrates the story of a strong lawyer, depicted by Saldaña, who is employed by a Mexican drug lord, played by Gascón, to devise a plan enabling his character to undergo gender-affirming surgery. This unconventional musical production, which blurs genre lines, is now available on Netflix and has garnered praise for its innovative storytelling techniques.
This film has earned several nominations for the prestigious Academy Awards, among them being Best Picture, Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film from a Foreign Country.
Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum last year, Gascón commented on her involvement in the film: “It’s an action movie without being one, a drama without being a drama, and a comedy that isn’t comedic. It’s truly a unique gift, and I feel incredibly honored to be part of it.
On the 5th of January, I had the honor to witness my film being named Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes. Gascón’s moving speech during the event resonated with me deeply as it echoed the themes of support for underserved communities, resilience, dignity, and self-acceptance that our movie embodies.
She expressed, “Threaten to imprison us, use violence, but you’ll never seize our souls, our resilience, or our dignity. Speak up. Be true to yourself; learn about your own identity.
Karla Sofía Gascón also won the Best Actress award at Cannes Film Festival last year.
