Tracy Morgan, who was part of Saturday Night Live from 1996 to 2003, shared his struggles during his initial years on the famous comedy show.
In the Peacock docuseries “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night,” Morgan shared his feelings of detachment and cultural isolation that lasted for about three years.
He reminisced, “I wished to let them see my humorous perspective on life, but during the initial three years, I often felt a bit culturally detached at times.
Morgan mentioned that his upbringing in a predominantly African American inner-city neighborhood, along with his personal background, played significant roles in shaping that particular sentiment of his.
Originating from a predominantly African-American community, and growing up in an urban environment, he expressed feeling isolated when appearing on one of the most Caucasian shows in the U.S. He said it seemed as though the others around him didn’t fully understand his experiences, which he conveyed by stating, “They weren’t getting it.
As Morgan explains, he often found it challenging to feel truly comprehended at SNL, as the atmosphere there differed significantly from what he had experienced in his past performing roles.
In that talk with the creator of Saturday Night Live, Lorne Michaels, he acknowledged his abilities and urged him to continue crafting his unique style of humor.
In his own words, Michael expressed, “Tracy, I brought you here for being humorous, not due to your race. Now, go ahead and perform as you usually do.” This encouragement from Michael was instrumental in boosting Tracy’s confidence and finding her rhythm on the show.
Over time, Morgan became known for his numerous iconic characters such as Brian Fellow, Astronaut Jones, and Dominican Lou. His stint on SNL paved the way for a prosperous career, leading him to appear in Tina Fey’s sitcom 30 Rock, as well as popular films like Cop Out, Superhero Movie, Coming 2 America, and Death at a Funeral.
SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night streams exclusively on Peacock.
