Dylan O’Brien, set to appear in the upcoming dark comedy Twinless, shared his fascination with the intriguing idea behind the film. This Sundance Film Festival contender delves into the unusual bond that forms between two mourning men who encounter each other at a support group for people who have lost their twins and develop an unexpected friendship.
In response to questions about the movie’s similarities to the lives of the Olsen Twins, writer-director James Sweeney, who shares the screen with O’Brien, explained that “I come from a time when twin idolization was prevalent. It was deeply ingrained in my cultural consciousness.
The movie also includes a scene where a character is seen watching the Olsen twins’ film “It Takes Two”. Sweeney pointed out that a twin could symbolize an ideal best friend with whom you can share all experiences. Being a military child who frequently moved around, Sweeney admitted he longed for such a connection during his upbringing.
In simpler terms, he admitted to harboring dreams about unexpectedly encountering his identical twin in the future. When asked about what intrigued him most about the movie, O’Brien (who portrays both Roman and his deceased twin brother Rocky) disclosed the aspect that held his attention.
Speaking about the unique nature of twins, the Maze Runner actor, who has been involved with the project since 2020, expressed his deep fascination. O’Brien shared that there are support groups for those without a twin (Twinless) because losing a twin is a “particularly unique loss and pain” that many people find hard to comprehend.
In Twinless, Roman O’Brien grapples with grief following the demise of his identical brother Rocky O’Brien. Attending a gathering for people experiencing twin loss, he encounters another bereaved individual, Dennis Sweeney, and they develop an unconventional friendship.
When discussing the relationship between these characters, Sweeney explained that they have a unique compatibility due to the fact they both contribute their personal burdens of sorrow and pain to their interactions.
Twinless will be released in theaters on January 23, 2025.
