Amazon is broadening its collection of fantasy stories by introducing a new series titled “Rise of the Empress“. According to Deadline, this series is an adaptation from the well-liked book series by author Julie C. Dao and offers a unique perspective on the classic Evil Queen tale.
The series is currently being produced by Amazon’s MGM Studios. A talented team has been assembled for this project, including writers Crystal Liu and James Wong, actress-producer Gemma Chan, as well as the production companies of Viola Davis, Julius Tennon, Forest Whitaker, and Nina Yang Bongiovi.
The tale takes place within an antique Asian empire that’s precariously close to falling apart. In order to preserve their dominion, they orchestrate a tactical union between a prince and a princess hailing from rival realms.
The balance shifts dramatically when a breathtaking peasant girl named Xifeng arrives, becoming entangled in a passionate love triangle instigated by a vindictive sorceress. This story is rich with magical elements, power struggles, and romantic tension, as Xifeng stands at the center of a fight to protect herself and the empire.
In simpler terms, JuVee Productions, Significant Productions, and actress Gemma Chan have received an order for a new television series titled ‘Rise of the Empress’ from Amazon MGM Studios.

Nick Pepper, representing Amazon MGM Studios, characterized the project as an uplifting story that embodies fortitude and determination. He commended the creative minds behind it, such as Liu, Chan, and the team at JuVee and Significant, for effectively portraying the allure of Dao’s realm. He guaranteed that this show will strike a chord with viewers across the world.
For an upcoming eight-part TV show, filming will be conducted in Malaysia. Dao is joining as a co-executive producer for this project. The creative team behind it can’t wait to construct this grand universe, focusing on its vivid aesthetics, multi-layered characters, and the intricate exploration of love and ambition through dark and twisted narratives.
The “Empress Ascending” book collection, which encompasses titles such as “Forest of a Thousand Lights” and “Realm of the Fiery Phoenix,” intertwines fantasy elements with Young Adult romance. This series expands Prime Video’s catalog of successful fantasy and YA productions, like “The Summer I Became Myself” and “The Wheel of Time.
