This article contains heavy spoilers for Back in Action.
In a thrilling twist, Cameron Diaz’s much-anticipated return to the big screen in Netflix’s film ‘Back in Action’ concludes on a suspenseful note, hinting at a potential follow-up. This action-packed comedy centers around Emily (played by Diaz) and her husband Matt (portrayed by Jamie Foxx), who are former CIA agents, now planning to retire. However, their peaceful retirement is disrupted when an old acquaintance, Baron (played by Andrew Scott), reappears on the scene after their nemesis Chuck has been defeated, forcing them back into the world of espionage once more.
Director Seth Gordon has given us a sneak peek into what a potential sequel might entail, but there’s no official announcement yet from Netflix. Gordon suggests that the narrative could focus on Emily and Matt’s offspring: Alice, a teenager portrayed by McKenna Roberts, and their tech-savvy son Leo, played by Rylan Jackson. The movie might explore the challenges of balancing family life with the dangers of espionage, particularly as Leo starts to excel in spy skills.
Towards the film’s conclusion, Baron reveals that Chuck’s corpse is missing, linking the following mission to Emily’s kin. At first reluctant, Emily discovers her long-hidden father could be pivotal in solving the mystery, leading to more escapades.
Regarding a possible sequel to the show, Gordon hinted to Entertainment Weekly that he has an idea for who might play the dad and what the storyline could involve. However, Netflix hasn’t officially acknowledged the idea of a sequel yet. So, if we all express our interest, there might be a chance they consider it.
In simpler terms, Gordon suggested that they should consider developing the mysterious character of Emily’s father, who might have a background in espionage and could potentially be connected to Ginny (Glenn Close), given her experience with MI6. The director wanted to enrich the storyline without disrupting the established timeline or character development.
He mentioned, “It seems I’m inclined towards stories that involve instances where a teenager’s personal life clashes with a family member who has a past as a spy. I think there are several key points or milestones in their lives that could serve as solid foundations for the narrative.
Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx’s Back in Action is currently streaming on Netflix.
