The final episode of the newest Star Wars story, titled “Skeleton Crew,” has aired. Though many viewers appreciated it, the initial audience for the debut was on the smaller side, creating some doubt about the show’s continuation in the future.
One point that caught viewers’ attention, especially in contrast to ‘The Acolyte’, was the lack of familiar Star Wars characters making brief appearances, even though the series creatively explored and deepened established storylines.
During an interview with Screen Rant, Skeleton Crew’s creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford shared why they chose not to include established Star Wars characters in the show.
Jon Watts and Christopher Ford disclosed that they had considered incorporating Star Wars cameos, with Lucasfilm agreeing, but ultimately decided to concentrate on crafting their unique narrative. Upon completing the initial season, they discovered that their tale stood strong independently, requiring no cameos for enhancement.
Christopher Ford: We were open to it.
Jon Watts: They didn’t stop us from trying new things at Lucasfilm; instead, they encouraged it if opportunities arose. However, our main priority was ensuring our storyline flowed well. By the end of writing the first season, we managed to tell our tale without requiring any cameos.
The makers pointed out that incorporating cameos might have interfered with the meticulously constructed narrative they’d created. They aimed for viewers to appreciate the novelty of the new characters based on their own qualities, rather than recognizing them from past appearances. Looking ahead, they envision opportunities for these characters to expand and find their place within the expansive Star Wars universe.
Christopher Ford: Later on, we pondered if we could add something extra. However, we realized it would disrupt the design, so we chose not to. Instead, we created a small yet significant piece.
Jon Watts: What really excites me is creating characters that people can genuinely care for, without relying too heavily on cameos. Later on, it could be fascinating to see these characters develop and explore their roles within a broader universe. I believe there’s a wealth of potential in this approach.
As a fan excitedly following the developments in ‘The Mandalorian‘ universe, the notion that Watts subtly hinted at our characters maturing could possibly be connected to the upcoming crossover event. After all, Dave Filoni is actively working on a sprawling MandoVerse crossover film, and recent whispers suggest that the Skeleton Crew characters might join our beloved cast for an epic journey through this expanded universe.
In the same timeframe as ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘The Book of Boba Fett,’ and ‘Ahsoka’ (which all follow ‘Return of the Jedi’), we find ourselves in the storyline of ‘Skeleton Crew.’ This implies that it is quite plausible for this event to occur during the New Republic era.
