The renowned director Shinichiro Watanabe, who brought us the iconic series “Cowboy Bebop”, is set to return in 2025 with a fresh anime titled “Lazarus”. This upcoming production will air on Toonami and is being animated by MAPPA, famous for their work on “Jujutsu Kaisen” and “Attack on Titan”. With its first episode having been screened at NYCC 2024 to great acclaim, “Lazarus” looks set to deliver an exciting journey.
In the year 2055, the narrative unfolds following the introduction of a revolutionary painkiller named ‘Hapna’. This wonder drug brings about an age of tranquility globally. However, Dr. Skinner, the inventor, stuns everyone by disclosing that it is, in fact, a sinister trap—fatal to users precisely three years after consumption.
In the face of impending catastrophe within the advanced metropolis known as Babylonia, an elite squad dubbed ‘Lazarus’ are dispatched on a mission to locate Dr. Skinner and retrieve a remedy against a lethal substance.
The series shares connections with Watanabe’s earlier creations, such as Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, as it is set within the same fictional universe. Additionally, Lazarus has been influenced by the actual opioid crisis that occurs in our world.

As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, let me share with you the impressive lineup of actors gracing our screens: I, personally, am thrilled to see Mamoru Miyano, famed for his portrayal of Light Yagami in Death Note, stepping into the role of Axel. Additionally, Makoto Furukawa, who brought Saitama to life in One-Punch Man, will be playing Doug. Last but not least, Maaya Uchida, recognized for her performance as Rikka from Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions, will captivate us as Christine.

Remarkable voices in the production are Megumi Hayashibara, known for her role as Faye in Cowboy Bebop, portraying Hersch, and Koichi Yamadera, who played Spike in Cowboy Bebop, voicing Dr. Skinner. The show boasts fight sequences designed by Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick, and a musical score by artists such as Kamasi Washington and Bonobo.
