Julia Stiles recently opened up about her experiences portraying Kat Stratford in the classic teen romantic comedy movie 10 Things I Hate About You, where she starred alongside Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
She talked about her past professional relationships with her ex-colleagues, as reported by People. Stiles mentioned that she maintains some contact with certain former co-stars such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larisa Oleynik, yet their interactions mostly take place remotely. In other words, she described her connections with her costars as being mostly long-distance.
She went on to explain that while distance and separate lifestyles can restrict interactions, she eagerly anticipates those occasional check-ins, such as running into Oleynik at a gathering not long ago.
Stiles pointed out that Josh resides in London, Joseph in Los Angeles, and it’s great news that Larisa Oleynik will be here this evening. It promises to be delightful to meet her.
Additionally, she recalled Kat Stratford as a strongly individualistic and unfalteringly bold figure. She recollected instances where criticism aimed at her, such as suggestions for her to smile more or behave seductively, which aligned with conventional norms, left her feeling disgruntled.
As a young actress, aged 17, I found myself auditioning and faced numerous bothersome remarks such as, “You’re too serious,” “Be more seductive,” or “Smile more.” Being at a stage in life where I was still discovering my identity, these comments resonated deeply.
Stiles found the role empowering when she was 17 years old, considering her early Hollywood auditioning trials. Julia explained, “Reading 10 Things I Hate About You, Kat Stratford was a fiery, vocal girl who didn’t care about others’ opinions. Being part of that movie was significant to me, and it’s still relevant today makes it even more wonderful.
10 Things I Hate About You held a special place in my heart as a devoted fan, since Kat’s fearless and vocal character mirrored the authentic persona I aspired to embody. I am deeply grateful for the film’s enduring impact on viewers and for being part of a narrative that celebrated individuality and resilience.
In a striking performance, Julia Stiles makes her directorial debut with the release of “Wish You Were Here” hitting cinemas on January 17.
