In approximately a month, it’s been announced that all ten episodes of the upcoming Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man animated series will be released.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man release schedule
Disney+ has unveiled the broadcast plan for the series, commencing with the premiere of the initial two episodes on Wednesday, the 29th of January. Each subsequent week will deliver three more episodes, with a pair of episodes being released every week until the final installment in the fourth week.
- Wednesday, January 29: Episode 1 and 2
- Wednesday, February 5: Episode 3, 4 and 5
- Wednesday, February 12: Episode 7 and 8
- Wednesday, February 19: Episode 9 and 10
Doesn’t bode well
Disney+ usually unveils shows one week at a time, but when a show appears unlikely to be popular, they opt for releasing all episodes simultaneously, like with Marvel’s Echo. The same approach was taken for What If…?, which didn’t attract a significant audience. On the other hand, X-Men ’97 has been released weekly, but it doesn’t have a large viewership either. Now, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is wrapping up in four weeks, and it’s been receiving heavy criticism on social media from fans.
Both the upcoming Marvel Zombies and The Eyes of Wakanda animated series, featuring Ms. Marvel, are comprised of just four episodes each. It’s plausible that Disney+ may release all episodes in one day or distribute them over two weeks instead of four weeks, which appears less likely.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man already a bomb?
Initially, the show was intended to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but they made some changes. It’s likely beneficial that it’s no longer associated with the MCU because it wouldn’t negatively impact their version of Spider-Man, although it could potentially harm the broader Spider-Man franchise.
In a nod to contemporary audiences, the version of Spider-Man we know as “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spidey” is being crafted by Marvel creators who have faced criticism for their post-“Infinity War” management of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Characters like Norman and Harry Osborn are now of different ethnicities, and it appears Mary Jane won’t feature in this series. The story takes place in an alternate universe, much like “What If…?” The animation quality has sparked controversy, prompting suggestions such as reviving the animation style of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” for future projects, like a potential return of Netflix’s “Daredevil.
Marvel getting back on the right track
It appears that Feige and Marvel Studios are making progress in getting back on track, having revamped the “Daredevil: Born Again” project – just as I predicted. There’s been talk that Feige has parted ways with certain producers who have allegedly negatively impacted the MCU. Notably, Nate Moore is leaving Marvel Studios, joining Victoria Alonso and others in their departures. Furthermore, the team responsible for Disney+ MCU shows no longer works directly for Marvel, as Marvel Television has undergone restructuring (which means “She-Hulk” Season 2 may not happen, among other changes).
Speaking of which, Marvel continues to work on several titles that some might consider less than stellar. Among these are “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” and the earlier mentioned “Marvel Zombies”, which is set to include Ms. Marvel, Ironheart, and Kate Bishop. As for “Eyes of Wakanda”, we’ll have to wait and see if it turns out to be a hit.
As a die-hard Marvel fan, I’m eagerly anticipating “Captain America: Brave New World,” but I must admit, the plot details don’t exactly set my heart racing. The upcoming series, “Thunderbolts,” focusing on a downtrodden Yelena, doesn’t seem to spark much excitement either. The upcoming “Fantastic Four” has potential, however, whispers suggest it will feature a female Silver Surfer and primarily focus on Sue Storm, with Reed Richards depicted as hindering her progress. Fingers crossed that the recent rewrites have managed to address these concerns and deliver a storyline that truly does justice to this iconic team.
The character known as “Wonder Man” is likewise expected to debut on Disney+, sharing a light-hearted tone with the series “She-Hulk”. Meanwhile, “Ironheart” is set for release too, but it seems to be a story about former gang members who have transitioned into activists, though some might perceive it as potentially dramatic.
I’m excitedly looking forward to the time when the Marvel Cinematic Universe regains its glory, which I believe will be around the release of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Spider-Man 4”. We’ve also got “Secret Wars”, another installment of “Black Panther”, and the return of the X-Men to look forward to. Keep your fingers crossed!
