You Can Listen to All of David Lynch’s Daily Weather Reports From 2020-2022

David Lynch, who tragically passed away at 78 on January 16, leaves behind an extraordinary body of work in film and television, including masterpieces like “Twin Peaks,” “Dune,” and “Blue Velvet.” However, it’s not just his films that have left a lasting impression; over the past few years, Lynch has also created something equally peculiar yet captivating – his daily weather reports. He started these daily forecasts in 2005, initially as phone calls to LA radio station INDIE 103.1, and later moved them to his own website, where he continued until 2010.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, David Lynch, like many others, found himself in quarantine. For nearly three years, this enigmatic and charming filmmaker shared daily weather updates with Angelenos. From the start of 2020 to the end of 2022, he continued with this unique routine. Occasionally, he touched upon other thoughts that were characteristic of him. Yet, he also opted for simplicity just as frequently. Here are a few of our favorites from his daily reports:

In the year 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, David Lynch, like everyone else, was in quarantine. For approximately three years, this eccentric and lovable filmmaker provided Angelenos with daily weather updates. From the beginning of 2020 to the end of 2022, he continued this unusual practice. At times, he delved into other thoughts that were reminiscent of his style, while at others, he maintained a simple approach. Here are some of our favorites from these daily reports:

Despite being renowned for the ominous and chilling nature of his art, David Lynch maintained an affable Midwestern demeanor that was genuine. He would casually use phrases like “by golly,” without any hint of sarcasm. For instance, he might say something like, “Here in LA, by golly, we’ve got rain, a gray sky, and a slight breeze… I hope this will clear up by this afternoon, leaving us with sunshine again and temperatures around 70 degrees. Have a wonderful day.” Frequently, one could see the vapor from his cup of coffee, as dark as the night sky without a moon, rising. We can only imagine that there might have been doughnuts to accompany them occasionally.

Following the sad passing of his frequent collaborator and composer Angelo Badalamenti, a particularly poignant weather report emerged. Instead of providing weather conditions, Lynch chose to express himself more personally, saying “Today, there is no music.” Shortly after this, David Lynch ceased his daily weather broadcasts and kept a relatively low public profile from then on.

Fortunately, all of his weather reports from 2020 and beyond on the DAVID LYNCH THEATER have been compiled into one extensive YouTube playlist. If you’re looking to hear this renowned voice discussing sunshine or anything else about the weather? You can find them all here on YouTube, saved, ideally, for future generations to enjoy. And isn’t that simply delightful? Here is the link to the entire playlist.
