Dan Slott Takes the Reins: Superman’s Universe at the Brink with Green Kryptonite Dawn!

DC Comics is launching a brand-new continuous series titled “Superman Unlimited“. This series will be penned by Dan Slott with illustrations by Rafael Albuquerque. The series will make its debut on May 21, 2025, as part of DC’s larger publishing project called “The Superman Summer“, which encompasses titles like “Action Comics“, the main Superman series, and additional titles as well.

The announcement has been made prior to the upcoming release of James Gunn’s “Superman” film, featuring David Corenswet, scheduled for July 11, 2025.

Dan Slott’s First DC Ongoing Series

Dan Slott, famed for his contributions to ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘Fantastic Four’, steps into the realm of DC Comics for the first time with ‘Superman Unlimited’. In a recent statement, Slott shared his enthusiasm about penning Superman: “I can’t wait to bring my unique voice to the Man of Steel in ‘Superman Unlimited’.

He’s the original and most renowned superhero ever, and I’ve longed to craft tales about him since forever. It’s not just his incredible abilities that captivate me, but his inner character that truly resonates. Alongside Rafael Albuquerque, we invite you on a journey with him each month – a journey you won’t want to miss. We have countless imaginative concepts in store for Superman, Lois Lane, the supporting characters, classic villains, and fresh faces too. Even if you’ve never read a comic book before or are a lifelong Superman fan, Superman Unlimited #1 is an ideal starting point to dive headfirst into this exciting world.

Green Kryptonite Changes the Game

As I sat down in the dimly lit cinema, the opening credits rolled, and I knew I was in for an exhilarating ride. The narrative commences with an earth-shattering event – a colossal Kryptonite meteor shower, exposing our beloved Superman’s greatest vulnerability across the globe. This rare resource, Green K, has now become the most coveted commodity on Earth, igniting a ruthless arms race among the powerful criminal empires.

In Metropolis, Intergang, led by a cunning new regime, is rapidly expanding its influence, with their foot soldiers armed to the teeth with Kryptonite bullets. The meteor’s impact has unleashed vast deposits of Kryptonite, harboring unspeakable terrors waiting to be unearthed.

In this new reality, Superman must adapt and innovate to survive. He will need to forge alliances with unexpected allies, develop advanced technology, and devise novel strategies if he hopes to continue his mission of truth, justice, and a brighter tomorrow. The clock is ticking, and the fate of humanity hangs in the balance!

The Daily Planet Expands

The series additionally delves into a revamped Daily Planet. A merger with Morgan Edge’s Galaxy Communications’ latest version transforms the Daily Planet into a multimedia news organization that includes a cable news channel, website, robust social media presence, and Lois Lane remains as editor in chief. Regular characters Jimmy Olsen, Ron Troupe, Cat Grant, and Steve Lombard will manage satellite offices scattered throughout the DC universe, forming a worldwide network. Powering it all is the tech-savvy of a new IT expert hailing from Gorilla City, King Solovar’s goddaughter, Tee-Nah.

What to Expect from “Summer of Superman”

Under the banner of “The Summer of Super-Stars”, we’ll be showcasing fresh and continuing tales centered around Superman, Superboy, Supergirl, Krypto, and more characters hailing from the Superman cosmos.

DC group editor Paul Kaminski said:

In the same vein as Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness’s “Superman/Batman” series from the early 2000s expanded the DC Universe’s Superman comics, “Superman Unlimited” aims to build upon this foundation. The story will deliver the grand, thrilling, aerial exploits that are synonymous with Superman, while also offering pivotal moments for all DC Superman-related titles by introducing an enormous Kryptonite deposit. Envision a world where Superman is thwarting a bank heist, yet every weapon is laced with Kryptonite bullets and every common criminal carries a Kryptonite knife. This world presents unprecedented peril that Superman and the entire DC Superman family of characters have never encountered before.

Kaminski continued:

We recently debuted “Justice League Unlimited” in the fall, where Mark Waid and Dan Mora are spinning an endless tale of superheroes within this ongoing series. On the other hand, Slott and Albuquerque’s “Superman Unlimited” presents a story of limitless Super-Villains fueled by Kryptonite. Green K is prevalent everywhere, and Superman must gear up to endure and adapt. Each word from Dan’s pitch and every stroke by Rafa promises surprises, and the visuals are breathtaking… 2025 will undoubtedly be a “Superman UNLIMITED” experience.
