Webtoon Entertainment is taking a daring step into Japan by making its first investment in a local manga and webcomic studio. Its Japanese division, LINE Digital Frontier, has purchased a portion of Tokyo-based studio No. 9, famous for hit series like “Savior of Divine Blood” and “I Am the Strongest Transcendent.” The goal of this collaboration is to broaden Webtoon’s content offerings in Japan, a rapidly expanding market for the global webcomic service.
Established in 2016, Studio No. 9 has earned a strong standing for producing manga and webcomics that strike a chord with audiences not only domestically but also abroad. Several of its productions have been localized into various languages such as Korean, English, and Mandarin, thereby expanding their reach to Webtoon’s global userbase. As part of the agreement, LINE Digital Frontier will bring on an external director to join Studio No. 9’s board, fostering a closer partnership between the two entities.
Webtoon Entertainment, a subsidiary of South Korea’s Naver Corporation, has achieved significant popularity in Japan. Regularly, their LINE Manga app leads in sales rankings among apps, occasionally surpassing revenue generated by gaming applications.
Junkoo Kim, CEO, emphasized Japan’s strategic relevance, referring to it as “the birthplace of manga and a hub for some of the world’s most captivating comic art.” Kim showed great excitement about the collaboration with No. 9, which has already produced international sensations and is ready to generate more webcomics that will appeal globally to Japanese audiences.
Investing in this area indicates a growing preference among Japanese entertainment firms for partnering internationally to extend their market presence. Specifically, Webtoon Entertainment is taking steps to adapt several of its well-known properties for worldwide consumption.
In other words, “Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint” is being made into an anime in partnership with Aniplex and Crunchyroll, just as “GOSU” is being adapted by Toei, the studio known for creating “Dragon Ball” and “One Piece.
In the current context, this step is being taken as webcomics are increasingly serving as a rich pool of adaptable content for TV shows, movies, and video games. The appetite for intellectual properties (IP) that can seamlessly move across various media has been on the rise, with companies such as Sony and Toho making comparable investments in manga and animation-related endeavors.
Webtoon Entertainment’s acquisition of a portion of No. 9 highlights their goal to merge local Japanese ingenuity with their worldwide platform, consistently delivering captivating content for viewers globally.
