10 Things I Hate About You Star Julia Stiles Gets Candid About Her Iconic Character; Says It Was Important In Her ‘Vulnerable’ Teen Years

Julia Stiles is well known for portraying Kat Stratford in the beloved romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, a movie that left an indelible impression on popular culture. Interestingly, the film’s success also had a favorable effect on Stiles’ personal life.

On January 15th, during the premiere of her first directorial film, Wish You Were Here, in New York City, Stiles reminisced about her iconic role from 1999. “There’s a magical quality in the air, and I adore it so much,” she expressed, referring to her vibrant character.

At the age of 17, she remembered auditioning and facing criticisms about her appearance, behavior, and other aspects – something that she found challenging as a young actress just discovering herself. “I was susceptible to it because I was still in the process of understanding who I truly am,” she explained to People magazine.

However, when she took on the character of Kat Stratford, a bold, frank young woman who disregarded others’ opinions, there was an inexplicable draw for her towards this role. It was particularly meaningful to be part of that film, and it continues to strike a chord with audiences today, which makes it even more gratifying, as she noted.

The film centers on Cameron (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a high school student, who’s on a mission to secure a date for Kat (Stiles) so he can ask out her younger sister Bianca (Larisa Oleynik). Gabrielle Union and the late Heath Ledger were among the talented cast members.

When asked about her contact with her fellow actors from the Jason Bourne series, she mentioned that they keep in touch, albeit not frequently due to geographical differences. Specifically, Joseph resides in Los Angeles, and Josh is based in London, making it challenging for them to meet up often.

She mentioned, “I’m aware that Larisa Oleynik is expected tonight, and it’s going to be a treat to catch a glimpse of her.” In her chat with Andy Cohen on the January 13 episode of Watch What Happens Live, she shared insights about her collaboration with Ledger.

She remarked, “He was an incredible presence,” referring to the late Heath Ledger, best known for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight. His performance in 2008 earned him a posthumous Academy Award.
